    The Big Issue is launching a trial to allow its magazine sellers to accept payments with contactless technology in Birmingham.

    The organisation is working with technology company iZettle to also test the idea in London, Bath, Bristol and Nottingham.

    The Big Issue said it wanted its vendors to continue to make a living in an increasingly cashless society amid a huge shift in consumer spending.

    The companies are hoping to roll the initiative out nationally.

  2. Repair work continues to delay rail servicespublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2018

    Rail passengers in Shropshire are being warned that disruption to services will continue as repair work continues following storms.

    Transport for Wales says damage caused by recent bad weather, combined with ageing trains, has led to an unprecedented number of carriages being out of use.

    Reduced services will continue as engineers complete repair work.

    The family of a man killed when he was hit by a car have said his death has left them "distraught".

    Alex Knight, 38, died at the scene of the crash in Bristol Street, Birmingham at the junction of Belgrave Middleway.

    Police said Mr Knight had been crossing the road, near where six people died last December, when he was struck on Saturday.

    A 21-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been bailed.

    An endurance runner donned a Father Christmas hat and ran more than 100 miles (160km) in a 24-hour event for charity.

    Shaun Marshall, 44, started his Santa Fun Run event in Brinton Park, Kidderminster, at midday on Saturday before completing the "mammoth" effort on Sunday.

    The former marine has raised thousands of pounds for the Kemp Hospice.

    He managed to run 100 miles (160km) in 23 hours and 35 minutes.

    A man has died after being hit by a car in Solihull yesterday.

    It's believed the 70-year-old pedestrian was crossing the road when he was struck by a silver VW Passat.

    Stratford Road at the junction of Church Road, Shirley, was closed for a time after the crash, which happened at about 17:00.

    Any witnesses are being urged to come forward.

    Two lanes of the M5 southbound in Worcestershire remain closed after an earlier car fire.

    Traffic was held for a time between J7 and J8 for emergency services to attend.

    Delays of about 30 minutes are being reported in the area, said Highways England.
