    A road in Birmingham city centre has been cordoned off and there's a large police presence in the area.

    Armed police are at the scene outside a block of flats on the corner of Longleat Avenue and Wheeleys Lane.

    Other emergency services are also at the scene.

    Drivers were urged to avoid the scene of a serious crash in Wolverhampton last night.

    Emergency services were called the scene on Birmingham New Road close to the junction of Lawnswood Avenue.

    The Frankwell Riverside car park in Shrewsbury has closed and there's only restricted access to the main car park.

    Flood defence barriers are being installed in preparation for heavy rain and rising river levels, the Environment Agency says.

    Flood warnings are currently in place along the Vyrnwy in Maesbrook and Melverley but none as yet for the River Severn.

    Five Labour MPs have quit party roles to defy orders and vote against holding a fresh Brexit referendum, including Stoke-on-Trent MP, Ruth Smeeth.

    Labour ordered its MPs to abstain on a cross-party bid to delay Brexit to allow a referendum on backing whatever deal is agreed or remaining in the EU.

    The MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, quit as parliamentary private secretary to Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson - saying it was a "difficult decision but I have a duty to support the will of my constituents".

    She wrote: "We need to leave and leave with a deal that works for the Potteries."

  5. Talks to be held to end to bin disputepublished at 07:29 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2019

    Talks will be held later to discuss an agreement that could bring an end to the bin strike in Birmingham.

    Workers began a series of walkouts over "secret payments" made to non-striking GMB staff after a dispute in 2017.

    Unite and Unison recently backed proposals that go before the council's cabinet on Friday, in which workers would receive payments of £3,500.

    The latest strikes and industrial action have cost the council more than £5.8m, a report says.

  6. Some Shrewsbury rail services disuptedpublished at 07:12 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2019

    A road vehicle has struck a railway bridge between Shrewsbury and Welshpool, closing the line between these stations, the National Rail website says.

    There is no firm estimate yet of how long disruption will last but it is likely to continue until at least 13:00.

    Services between Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth are affected. Road transport will be put in place between Shrewsbury and Welshpool.

    The University of Wolverhampton's Vice Chancellor says he wants its new base in Telford town centre to be "a brand new facility that will focus on the skills for the future".

    Professor Geoff Layer (pictured below) pointed out they've had a campus in the town for 25 years now and said it was "now entering the fourth Industrial Revolution".

    "It's a digital revolution, it's a creative industries revolution, it's something different."

    He explained the new building, which the university wants to build beside Southwater lake, will focus on new technology.

    Prof Layer also said it would help attract new investment to the town.

    A Worcestershire swimming club says it's having to hold a competition in Wolverhampton, because Worcester's Perdiswell Leisure Centre is asking for twice as much money.

    Worcester County Swimming Association says Freedom Leisure, which owns the Perdiswell pool, was charging £6,000 to hire the pool for a weekend, because it wanted loss of income compensation on top of hire charges.

    Freedom Leisure says WCSA had paid the fee to hold events in the past, and it simply "wasn't possible" to accommodate all the dates it had asked for while keeping the pool open to the community.

  14. Plans to develop recreation ground to be reviewedpublished at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2019

    A judge has ordered a review into the proposed sale of part of a recreation ground by Shrewsbury town council for housing.

    Protesters say the land off Falstaff Street was given to the public in 1925 and are challenging plans to build 15 homes there.

    The town council says it has done nothing wrong, as has Shropshire Council, which granted the planning permission.

    Proposals to expand the University of Wolverhampton's health facility at its Walsall base have been given the go-ahead.

    Walsall Council planners have approved the plan to extend the Sister Dora Building at the campus off Gorway Road and create new lab facilities and teaching rooms.

    The university said the expansion would support its vision to create "an exciting and sector leading teaching facility for the Institute of Health’s Clinical Skills Faculty".

    A further 19 car parking spaces will be provided as a result of this work.

  18. Stop and search powers after knife crime concernspublished at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2019

    Police have been granted powers to stop and search people in parts of Crewe for weapons, from today until Monday.

    The powers were granted after concerns were raised about a small number of knife-related incidents in the town.

    Officers will be able to stop any person or vehicle in the Nantwich Road area (shown on the map above) including the platforms of the railway station.

    Plans for a new crematorium in north Shropshire, which were due to be heard by councillors today, have been deferred because of concerns the location wasn't quiet enough.

    The Ministry of Defence has previously said the RAF might be forced to stop using the military training camp at Nesscliffe, if helicopters have to avoid flying low during funerals, because they make too much noise.

    And there were also concerns about noise from the nearby A5.

    If it gets approval, the crematorium would be able to carry out more than 800 cremations a year.

    The Shropshire Council report on the application says: "The existing land uses of the area, including MOD activity, have been taken into account and it is not considered that the proposal is incompatible with these."
