A proposal to axe councillors from key safety roles at Villa Park, St Andrew’s and Warwickshire County Cricket ground has been branded an "insult".

The attack by spectator Paul Mitchell on Villa captain Jack Grealish during the local derby with Birmingham City last month has raised concerns about legal liability if someone was seriously injured.

The 27-year-old from Rubery was jailed for 14 weeks but as a result of the incident the role of Birmingham city councillors nominated to sit on Safety Advisory Groups (SAGS) at the three main sports stadiums is now being formally reviewed.

It was proposed to immediately axe all members until the review had taken place but that idea was defeated by the council’s Licensing and Public Protection Committee on Wednesday.

SAGS were introduced by councils in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 when 96 football fans died in a crush.

  5. Cautions for midwives over baby deathpublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 12 April 2019
    Breaking

Two Shropshire midwives have been cautioned in connection with the death of a baby in Telford four years ago.

Laura Jones and Hayley Lacey had been the subject of a Nursing and Midwifery Council investigation. Yesterday a panel decided the pair were guilty of misconduct.

The panel said a suspension would not be appropriate as the risk of repeat misconduct is "minimal" and both had shown remorse.

But it added it wanted to make sure some action was taken to maintain public confidence in midwives.

The NMC said Laura Jones should have called a doctor for help - and checked the fetal heart rate. She and Hayley Lacey did not communicate well enough or complete a proper handover, it said.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust said “This has been a terrible experience for the baby’s family and extremely distressing for the midwives who have recognised that their care fell short of what was required of them."

And it said it had "invested heavily" in training in recent years.

About £130,000 has been raised since June last year in crowdfunding events but the project hinges on a bid for a £1.1m grant to be submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in August.

If that is successful it is hoped building work could start in April next year with an estimated opening around May/June 2021.
