  1. Midwives guilty of misconduct over baby's carepublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

    Two midwives have been found guilty of misconduct in connection with the death of a baby in Telford.

    Laura Jones and Hayley Lacey, based at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, have been appearing before the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in London.

    Earlier this week, Ms Jones admitted some elements of her care were "completely unacceptable", including not carrying out a proper handover and said she should have referred the mother to a doctor when her blood pressure was too high.

    The child, known as Baby K, died four days after being born at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital on 19 August 2015. Neither midwife is accused of causing the death of the boy.

    The NMC must now decide whether further action is needed.

    A third midwife Kerry Davies was told she would face no further action.

    A woman has been injured during a robbery at a health club in Stoke-on-Trent.

    The receptionist at the club on Burnham Street, Fenton was harmed during a struggle, said Staffordshire Police.

    The offender made off with a quantity of cash.

    The roof of the property, on Walley's Drive, near Newcastle-under-Lyme, was well alight when they arrived just after 13:00, said Staffordshire Fire Service.

    Police investigating a serious assault outside a Birmingham pub which left the victim "fighting for his life" have released an image of a witness they're keen to speak to.

    A man remains in hospital in a critical condition after the assault outside the Fox and Goose, Greets Green Road, West Bromwich on Friday 5 April.

    The witness, who gave first aid to the victim, may have "significant evidence," police said.

    A 34-year-old man, charged with wounding with intent, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Monday and is next set to appear at Crown Court on 7 May.

    A jury has retired to consider its verdicts on former Worcestershire county cricketer Alex Hepburn, accused of raping a woman during a sexual conquest competition set up on a WhatsApp group.

    The 23-year-old denies two counts of rape connected to the alleged attack in the early hours of 1 April 2017, at his flat in Worcester.

    During the trial, prosecutors told Worcester Crown Court Mr Hepburn raped the woman while she was asleep after she had earlier had consensual sex with his then team-mate Joe Clarke.

    The defendant told the jury the woman had herself instigated sex.

  10. Woman, 70, killed 'while crossing road with family'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

    A woman killed when she was hit by a motorbike in Sandwell last night is thought to have been crossing the road with two other members of her family, police say.

    The 70-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene just after 21:00.

    “I am appealing for any witnesses of this collision to come forward, particularly if anyone has any dashcam footage," Insp Stephen Radford, from West Midlands Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said.

    “We have spoken with two motorcyclists at the scene and they are both helping police with enquiries."

  11. Air pollution scheme wins £53K fundingpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

    A project to monitor air pollution in Shropshire has been awarded £53,000 government funding.

    Shropshire Council said the cash would be used to install monitors to track levels of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates in Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth.

    It comes as a report suggests that one in five cases of childhood asthma are caused by traffic pollution.

    Three locations in Shropshire have recently been identified as breaching air pollution limits: outside the railway station in Shrewsbury - on Whitburn Street in Bridgnorth - and at the Tern Hill roundabout near Market Drayton.

    A man convicted of manslaughter over the death of a bulimic student who took toxic slimming pills bought online is to face a retrial.

    Eloise Parry, 21, from Shrewsbury, died after taking eight diet pills containing dinitrophenol (DNP).

    Bernard Rebelo, 30, from Gosport, was jailed for seven years after being found guilty of two manslaughter charges and placing unsafe food on the market in June 2018.

    His manslaughter convictions were overturned by the Court of Appeal today.

    The court ordered that Rebelo should stand trial on a single charge of gross negligence manslaughter.

    An extra 300,000 tonnes of sand and gravel is set to be quarried from a site in Warwickshire after councillors approved plans to expand operations.

    Wolston Fields Quarry near Ryton-on-Dunsmore was due to stop operating in 2021, but owners Smiths Concrete applied for an extension because they found there were more deposits in the former agricultural land than they expected.

    Warwickshire County Council approved the plan which will see work continue until 2023, with restoration of the site a year later.

    The world's biggest Primark store has opened its doors to shoppers in Birmingham.

    The shops covers 161,000 sq ft over five floors, and features three restaurants, a barber shop and a beauty studio.

    Mother-of-six Charmaine Straker, 32, from Springhill, queued to enter the store with her three children.

    She said stores on this sort of scale "only ever open in London" and that its arrival in Birmingham was great news for the second city.

    An elderly shop worker was seriously assaulted by two men during a violent robbery at a Coventry jewellers.

    Gold was stolen from Akash Jewellers on Foleshill road during the incident on Wednesday, police said.

    The victim remains in hospital with a suspected broken jaw, said West Midlands Police.
