  15. Ricoh Arena: Council 'delighted' with Supreme Court rulingpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 16 April 2019

Coventry City Council says it's delighted with the rejection of Sky Blues owners' latest legal bid to challenge the sale of the Ricoh Arena.

The owners had been seeking to appeal an earlier knock-back of their plan for a judicial review into the 2014 transaction, in which the local authority sold the stadium - where Coventry City plays - to rugby club, Wasps.

City's contract to play there expires at the end of the season but Wasps have always said they will not negotiate until the legal action ends. The Sky Blues have been warned they could be expelled from the Football League if they can't find a home.

The case involving the Sisu companies - including Otium Entertainment and Sky Blue Sports & Leisure - hinged on the claim the council undervalued the stadium by £28m when it was sold.

Following Tuesday's Supreme Court decision, a joint statement from council leader George Duggins and leader of the opposition Gary Ridley said the latest judgment "once again justifies why we have robustly defended all claims" against the authority.

It added it was the authority's belief its decisions were "appropriate, lawful and in the best interests of Coventry tax payers".

  18. Man detained over mother's 'milky tea row' deathpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 16 April 2019

A man who killed his mother and told police they had argued over a cup of tea that "wasn't milky enough" has been ordered to be detained in hospital indefinitely.

Thomas Westwood, 47, inflicted nine stab wounds using "severe" force and pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at a previous Warwick Crown Court hearing.

He had initially claimed 68-year-old Susan Westwood threatened him with a knife at their Coventry home in 2017. Opening the facts of the case against him today, the prosecution said he later admitted on remand that he had not acted in self-defence, with the claim thought to be a symptom of his mental illness.

He has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Mrs Westwood was found when police arrived at the property following a 999 call. In it, Westwood had said his mother wanted to slit his throat.

The court heard he told an officer she threatened him because the tea he'd made her was not milky enough.
