  1. Park building targeted in suspected arson attackpublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 15 April 2019

    A park pavilion in Staffordshire has been damaged in a suspected arson attack.

    Police say officers were called to the fire in Tunstall Park just before 02:00 this morning.

    The structure suffered "substantial damage", said Staffordshire Police.

    It's asking anyone with information to come forward.

  2. Eight arrested as smoke bombs thrown at fanspublished at 09:00 British Summer Time 15 April 2019

    Eight people were arrested and five ejected from the ground after smoke bombs and objects were thrown at fans during Coventry City's match against Sunderland.

    Northumbria Police said it was investigating "pockets of disorder" during and after the match, at the Stadium of Light, including reports of objects being thrown from the away end into the stands below.

    Match commander, Ch Insp Jamie Pitt, said there was "absolutely no place in football for this sort of behaviour," and that the force was working with both clubs as they investigate the matter.

    A spokesperson from Sunderland AFC said it was "disappointed by the disrespectful behaviour of many away fans at the home match against Coventry City."

    One man has been charged with breaching a football banning order, two men charged with public order offences and three released with two men facing no further action.

    Sunderland's independent fan group, Red and White Army, tweeted it would be speaking to the club about fan safety.

    The colleagues of a teacher whose 12-year-old boy suffers with a rare blood disorder are to be tested to see if they are a bone marrow match.

    Paddy Igoe, from Earlsdon, Coventry was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, a condition which leaves him tired and lethargic and requires frequent blood transfusions.

    Staff at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, in Coventry, have rallied around his mother Donna Igoe and are due to host a public donor drive.

    Paddy failed to recover from a minor illness earlier this year and was then diagnosed with the condition while staying at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    "It will be really special [if a match is found] because I won't have to go through as much pain," he said.

    Events are being held on 27 April at the Ricoh Arena, 2 May at Earlsdon Primary School and 3 May at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.

  6. Man arrested after woman's body foundpublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 15 April 2019

    Officers are continuing to investigate the death of a woman found at a property in Cannock.

    A 47-year-old man arrested “in connection with the death” remains in custody, police said.

    Staffordshire Police officers were called to an address in Anglesey Street at 18:30 on Saturday.

    A post-mortem examination is due to take place and the woman's death is being treated as unexplained.

  7. Churchgoers in 114-mile knife-protest marchpublished at 08:12 British Summer Time 15 April 2019

    A group of Birmingham churchgoers are taking part in a 114-mile protest march to raise awareness of knife crime.

    Worshippers from Kingstanding Methodist Church are making the six-day trip to Westminster carrying a cross made out of about 200 knives.

    The blades have either been handed into the church or confiscated by West Midlands Police.

    The aim of the march is to put pressure on the government to do more to tackle knife crime.

    The protestors will walk through Kenilworth, Daventry, Dunstable and Watford on their way to London - spending nights at local churches along the way.

  9. Attack on two girls investigatedpublished at 07:41 British Summer Time 15 April 2019

    Two teenage girls have been threatened and attacked by a man in Stoke-on-Trent, police say.

    The attack happened as the girls were walking home across land off Berryhill Walkway in Adderley Green at about 22:30 on Sunday.

    The man ran off following the incident, Staffordshire Police said.

    Officers are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
