  1. Tributes as police name victim of fatal shootingpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 9 May 2019

    A man who was shot dead in the Ladywood area of Birmingham on Tuesday has been identified as 23-year-old Dante Mullings, who lived locally.

    West Midlands Police said he was one of three men in a car which was targeted by a shooter in an oncoming vehicle on St Vincent Road.

    Mr Mullings died at the scene.

    A family statement said: "Our family, friends and all who knew Dante are absolutely broken beyond belief. Dante was the epitome of kind, caring and thoughtful."

    One of the two men he was with, a 19-year-old, is still being treated in hospital for injuries that are not believed to be life-changing. The other, who is 20, has since been discharged.

    Changes are going to be made to a pool at a Solihull park, after complaints of stagnant water causing "foul odours".

    Silt has built up in the artificial pool at Chelmsley Wood Local Nature Reserve, which is part of Merdien Park, and workers will be removing part of a weir in the summer, to allow the lake to drain.

    Water will then be allowed to flow through the lake from Kingshurst Brook.

    Solihull Council said the remainder of the weir structure, beneath the footbridge, would then be covered with excavated soil and planted.

    The site is also being redesigned, with new wetland and ponds among the features.

    A woman was left with a serious face injury after an assault at a pub in Atherstone, Warwickshire.

    The incident at the Chariots Bar, Church Street, led to violent disorder in the early hours of Monday morning, police said.

    Two men from Atherstone, aged 26 and 44, arrested on suspicion of assault, have both been released under investigation, said Warwickshire Police.

    Officers are asking any witnesses to come forward.

    Port Vale chief executive Colin Garlick says the appointment of a manager is the most important decision new owners Kevin and Carol Shanahan will have to make.

    John Askey's contract expires at the end of the month and talks about an extension have already started, with Mr Garlick saying the Shanahans agree about the importance of getting the right man.

    The chief executive also said there is a "lot of hard work to do" and urged fans to be patient.

    Almost 1,000 people have responded to a consultation on bus services in the Shropshire Council area.

    The authority is proposing cutting a number of service, increasing park and ride prices and ending group discounts and concessions.

  8. Council looks to declare 'climate change emergency'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 9 May 2019

    A Shropshire councillor has been given the task of leading the authority's efforts to tackle climate change - and his first act has been to suggest the council declares a 'climate change emergency'.

    The Conservative member for the Battlefield ward, Dean Carroll, has put forward a motion to go before full council on 18 May which states: "This council believes that climate change presents a serious threat to humanity with the potential impacts on weather systems and biodiversity being catastrophic if allowed to continue to increase unchecked."

    The motion goes on to say that local authorities have a big role to play in encouraging people to change their behaviour.

    In recent months a number of other local authorities across England have passed motions declaring a ‘climate emergency’.

    Tributes have been paid in Parliament to a soldier who was killed by an elephant during an anti-poaching operation.

    Mathew Talbot, 22, of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, was on patrol in Liwonde National Park on 5 May when he was charged by the animal.

    His commanding officer, Lt Col Ed Launders, described Guardsman Talbot, who was from the West Midlands, as "determined and big-hearted".

  12. Water restored to homes after major pipe burstpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 9 May 2019

    Severn Trent says everyone in Redditch who lost their water when a pipe burst this morning should be reconnected now.

    Around 800 homes and eight schools were affected when the pipe broke and flooded Warwick Highway.

    Severn Trent says work to fix the pipe is still ongoing and a section of the road will remain closed until that work is complete.

    It has been able to restore water supply to homes by re-routing it down other pipes.

    French car group PSA - whose brands include Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Vauxhall - has denied reports that it is close to buying Jaguar Land Rover.

    Responding to the report, PSA said: "We deny this information.

    "Groupe PSA is not in a hurry for any acquisition and can stand alone. We are generating the cashflow necessary to pay for our future."

    However, the company added: "If an opportunity comes, like Opel-Vauxhall, we will consider it."

    A woman who admitted starting a house fire in Stoke-on-Trent has been sentenced to 32 months in prison.

    Jane Clarke, 42, of, Norton, Stoke-on-Trent, was charged with arson with intent to endanger life after the blaze in Bradbury Close in November last year.

    Two men suffering from the effects of breaking in smoke were taken to hospital after the fire.

    A pensioner who is suing Wolverhampton Wanderers, saying he designed the club's crest, is having his case heard at the High Court in London.

    Peter Davies, who is in his early 70s, says he created the design when he was a schoolboy and has made a copyright complaint.

    Mr Davies says he drew the wolf's head logo at school in the early 1960s and entered it in a competition run by a Wolverhampton art gallery.

    The Premier League football club dispute his claim and the trial is expected to last four days.

    The family of a vulnerable woman who was found - tortured and naked - on a disused railway line have asked why more wasn't done to protect her.

    In August 2010 the body of the "very trusting" 27 year-old Gemma Hayter was found by a jogger in Rugby, Warwickshire.

    Three people were convicted of her murder, receiving life sentences, with two others convicted of manslaughter.

    She had been subjected to "vile torture", said the judge.

    Throughout her life, Gemma’s mother had fought with social services and the medical profession to get a diagnosis for the learning disability that Gemma had.

  19. Suspected thief turns up at police station in stolen carpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 9 May 2019

    A suspected thief has been arrested - after knocking on the door of a police station in Birmingham claiming he was being chased.

    The man had been accused of driving off from a petrol station without paying a week earlier.

    The 41-year-old, who asked for help at Newtown police station just after 08:00 today, is also accused of robbery and driving while banned.

    West Midlands Police tweeted he also drove himself to the station in a stolen car.
