    Parts of the West Midlands are already seeing heavy rain showers, but it's set to get worse.

    A Met Office is warning , externalis in place for most of the West Midlands until 23:00, with Warwickshire and Worcestershire expected to face the worse of the weather.

    Some flooding of homes and businesses is likely, the Met Office said, with spray and flooding on roads likely to disrupt travel.

    A fire in woodland close to Keele University in Staffordshire is being treated as arson, said the fire service.

    Crews were called to the scene at 10:15 today, and pumped water from a nearby pond to fight the blaze.

    About 20 firefighters have now left the scene.

    A machete was found concealed inside a man's coat after police officers say they recognised he was wanted for questioning over a burglary in Coventry.

    The 20-year-old was detained on the top deck of a bus in Hales Street, Coventry city centre on Wednesday.

    The weapon was found inside a jacket that had been discarded nearby.

    He appeared before magistrates in the city yesterday charged with possessing an offensive weapon in public.

    He's also been bailed in connection with the burglary while enquiries continue, said West Midlands Police.

  4. Town to get new medical practicepublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    A business plan for a new medical practice in Shifnal has been approved and construction could start early next year, Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group has said.

    It will be built on the new Haughton Road housing estate, and the CCG said it could be ready to open in early 2021.

    If planning permission is granted the building will have 11 consulting rooms, plus more for treatment, counselling and interviews, as well as spaces for 58 cars outside.

  6. Train set underground gas supply alightpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    This is the fire on the Churnet Valley Railway which firefighters had to reach by travelling on a steam train earlier in the week.

    Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said gas from a ruptured main had risen to the surface and was ignited by sparks from a passing locomotive on Wednesday afternoon.

    The fire service said crews used a steam locomotive to get to it first of all, because it was three quarters of a mile from the nearest station, and then used a diesel train to transport firefighting equipment to the scene.

    When they got there they found surrounding bushes were also on fire.

    It took eight hours to cut off the gas supply and put the fire out and the fire service has thanked the railway for the use of the train.

  8. Firefighters work to damp down scrap yard firepublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    Firefighters are still at the scene of a "severe" fire at a scrap yard in Dudley.

    Household rubbish covering an area though to be about 30m x 50m was well alight when crews were called to deal with the blaze at the yard on Bromley Street in Lye, shortly after 20:15 on Thursday.

    The team there is still damping down and turning over the rubbish in order to find any hot spots, a fire service spokesperson said.

    Afterwards, fire investigators are expected to move in.

    An award-winning garden from the Chelsea Flower Show will be unveiled to the public in Birmingham on Saturday.

    The city council's garden focuses on the themes of air quality, water conservation, reducing waste and community involvement.

    The local authority once again worked with Baroness Floella Benjamin to win the council's eighth gold award at the show.

    Central to the display is a three-metre-high head, comprised of more than 3000 tubes, which will be drinking water from a disposable cup using a plastic straw.

    It will officially be opened in Victoria Square at 11:00 on Saturday.

    A man has been robbed by three men carrying a gun in Stoke-on-Trent this morning.

    Staffordshire Police said he was attacked as he was getting into his car on George Avenue in Meir just after 01:40 when he was attacked.

    Coventry City says it appreciates fans might not want to travel to Birmingham next season, to watch home games at Birmigham City's St Andrew's stadium.

    It said was "a situation and decision that no football fan should have to ever face".

    They've had to make the temporary arrangement because they've been unable to reach an deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

    The club said it was "a very sad day for Coventry City Football Club, the City of Coventry, Coventrians and most importantly Sky Blues supporters".

    It added: "We are incredibly disappointed and extremely frustrated that continuing differences between our owners Sisu and Wasps, and also Coventry City Council, could not be set aside to allow for a deal to play the club’s home games at the Ricoh Arena."

    There will be a daytime ban on drones and unmanned aircraft being flown within six miles of RAF Cosford from 14:00 this afternoon.

    It's to allow pilots to practise ahead of the air show on Sunday, with the organisers saying there will be "a large number of aircraft involved in high-energy manoeuvres."

    About 50,000 people are expected to visit the show and the ban won't be lifted until 18:00 on Sunday.
