    The parents of a student who was found dead in a river are supporting a campaign to cut the number of people drowning.

    Thomas Jones, 18, disappeared nine days before his body was recovered from the River Severn in Worcester in September.

    The Royal Life Saving Society, based in Worcester, said 254 people drowned last year in inland waters such as rivers and lakes, a rise of 12 on 2017.

    More than £160,000 has been awarded to schemes across the West Midlands, external to improve cycle facilities at railway stations.

    Coventry has been given £67,000 with £97,800 awarded to improve facilities at Droitwich, Rowley, Regis, Shenstone and Four Oaks stations by the Department for Transport.

    Coventry railway station is currently undergoing a £82m transformation.

    Gary Crookes, a city councillor and former Lord Mayor of Coventry, has died aged 68, it's been announced.

    Mr Crookes represented Wainbody ward for the Conservatives for almost 25 years, having first become a councillor in 1995.

    The local party said he was "dedicated and hard working" who "loved Coventry and was committed to helping our city".

    Water levels on the River Severn and the River Vyrnwy are expected to stay high into the weekend, the Environment Agency said.

    There are still two flood warnings on the Severn, external and two on the Vyrnwy , externalin Shropshire and Worcestershire and the agency said it was expecting more rain in the next 24 hours.

    Two more hospital patients have died in an outbreak of listeria , externallinked to pre-packed sandwiches.

    Public Health England (PHE) said the victims were among nine patients affected in England.

    The death of two of patients from Manchester Royal Infirmary (pictured) and another patient at Aintree Hospital had already been confirmed by the investigation.

    PHE has identified three further cases of listeria, in addition to the original six.

    Sandwiches and salads from The Good Food Chain linked to the outbreak have been withdrawn and production stopped at its facility in in Stone, Staffordshire.

    Coventry City has confirmed the vast majority of home games next season will be on Saturdays, external after the EFL agreed to pair the club with hosts Birmingham City to avoid fixture clashes.

    It means Coventry City will have home games when Birmingham City are playing away - and vice versa.

    City also say West Midlands Police has no issue with the Sky Blues playing in Birmingham at the same time as Aston Villa.

    The club confirmed the groundshare after failing to agree a deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

    The club said it would update fans further following the release of fixtures at 09:00 on Thursday.
