    The government says they would only consider a merger of Shropshire's two councils if they both submitted a proposal.

    The Shrewsbury and Atcham MP, Daniel Kawczynski, had written to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, after tweeting to say, external he was looking for an "iron-clad business case to government for the abolition of Telford Council".

    Talk of a merger has been rejected by the leaders of both Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council, and the two MPs representing Telford, Mark Pritchard and Lucy Allan.

    Ambulances carrying 20 patients had to wait more than an hour to be admitted to the Royal Stoke Hospital yesterday because of "annual maintenance" at its accident and emergency department.

    The hospital said "processes for ambulance handover were delayed and had an impact on the number of ambulances waiting at the emergency department for a brief period yesterday".

    It said improvements had been made today.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said it sent someone to help manage the hold-up yesterday and said it brought 205 patients to the A&E department - lower than the expected number.

  5. Man charged with assaulting paramedic and police officerpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 18 June 2019

    A man has been charged with assault after a paramedic and police officer were attacked in Warwickshire.

    The pair were assaulted after being called to a report of an incident at a property in New Street, Bulkington, on Sunday evening.

    The 46-year-old man, from the town, has been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker, one count of common assault on an emergency worker and one count of using threatening, abusive or insulting words to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

    He's due at Warwick Magistrates' Court today.

    The cost widening the A500 near Crewe to a dual carriageway has increased by £10m to almost £68.7m, but Cheshire East Council believes it won't have to pay the extra money itself.

    The authority said the estimated cost has gone up because there's a defect in the embankment on the existing road and National Grid equipment needs moving.

    But because the government has changed funding rules for major road projects, the council said it's confident the cost rise will be met by the Department for Transport.

    Work on the stretch between the M6 and the first roundabout towards Crewe is set to begin at the end of next year.

    A man has been charged with perverting the course of justice over the death of 18-year-old Hazrat Umar.

    The college student was stabbed in Norwood Road, Bordesley Green, Birmingham, on 25 February.

    Mahmood Sarwar, 51, of Endicott Road, Aston has been charged with perverting the course of justice, and is set to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 16 July.

    Adam Muhammad,17, has admitted murdering the teenager and was sentenced to life, with a minimum term of 14 years and three months.

    Walsall councillors have called on the community to help save a town hospice from being axed.

    Earlier this month, Acorns Children’s Hospice announced its facility in Walstead Road, Walsall, could be closed after 20 years of supporting youngsters with life-limiting illnesses.

    Bosses said the proposal, which has put 61 jobs at risk, was put forward due to the rising cost in care and they added families would be re-accommodated in their Birmingham and Worcester centres.

    Councillor Tim Wilson, in charge of children's services at the council, said: “A decision had not yet been made. There is opportunity, through consultation, to shape and influence the decision. We must collectively take this opportunity.”

    The introduction of Birmingham's Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is to be postponed due to a government delay in digital systems to make the zones enforceable.

    The proposed zone was due to come into force in January 2020, but the vehicle checker tool, due to be delivered in October, now won't be ready until December.

    The council said the zone would now come into force in July next year at the earliest.

  13. Lisa Skidmore inquest: Police team 'had backlog' of casespublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 18 June 2019

    A police team supervising a sex offender who murdered a nurse while on licence was dealing with a "backlog" of cases and staff re-organisation, an inquest has heard.

    Sgt Clare Mortimer, a sex offender manager, said Leroy Campbell was transferred to her Birmingham East team in October 2016, after being moved to a Moseley hostel from Bilston.

    Campbell, 57, raped and murdered Lisa Skidmore on 24 November 2016, four months after being released from prison.

    Supervisor Ms Mortimer told Black Country Coroner's Court on Monday her team was "about 200 visits behind" but Campbell was seen by Wolverhampton officers during October.

    Police and probation staff had concerns over Campbell who had been experiencing "anxiety and paranoia" and feelings similar to when he offended, the inquest jury has heard.

    He was seen by Det Con Beth Jarrett from the Birmingham team on 9 November, who told the inquest he "seemed a lot more stable" than previously reported by colleagues.

    Campbell's case was taken over by a different officer due to a restructure but police did not see him again before Ms Skidmore's murder.

    The inquest examining circumstances surrounding her death continues in Oldbury.

    Donor drives have also been taking place to help a 12-year-old Coventry boy with a rare blood disorder.

    Paddy Igoe, from Earlsdon, has aplastic anaemia which requires frequent blood transfusions, and is also looking for a matching donor.

    Three boys have been bailed by Cheshire Police following a stabbing on a main road in Crewe on Sunday morning.

    The teenagers were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after man was attacked on Nantwich Road.
