    Coventry Blaze have signed Canadian defenceman Drew Schiestel from the Elite League play-off champions, Cardiff Devils.

    The 30-year-old, who has also played in North America, Germany, Denmark and Norway, says he will also be studying at the Coventry University Business School.

    Head coach Danny Stewart said he would "bring some experience to a young roster" and thanked the university for helping him land the player.

    A levy on new developments could have generated millions of pounds for Coventry had it been in place, a council has heard.

    In March, a housing and communities cabinet meeting was told the city may have missed out on £2.7m from a community infrastructure levy, because had it not been drawn up.

    On Tuesday, Councillor Peter Male called for the levy to be discussed as a “matter of urgency”.

    The levy, which raises funds from developers putting up new buildings, came into force nationally in April 2010, but Coventry City Council only looked into the idea last year.

    Funds generated can be used to fund anything from roads, schools to health facilities.

    The Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid has tweeted to say, external he is "truly humbled" by the support he received from colleagues and Conservatives around the country during his bid to be the next prime minister.

    He said the three remaining candidates "have earned their places in the final round" and he urged his party to get behind the eventual winner.

    Mr Javid also said he hoped his campaign had encouraged others to "aim high", adding "you have as much right as anyone to a seat at the top table, to be ambitious for yourself, and to make your voice heard".

    Archery and shooting have lost out to beach volleyball, para table tennis and women's cricket at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Press Association is reporting.

    The final list of sports is set to be unveiled by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) later today after a panel was set up to assess their merits.

    The sports must then be ratified by 51% of the CGF's 71 member associations at a general assembly later this summer.

    By including Para table tennis, Birmingham 2022 will feature an unprecedented eight para-sports and, if beach volleyball and women's cricket are approved, there will also be more female medallists than at any previous Commonwealth Games and a record six team sports.

    While Edgbaston would host the T20 cricket matches, it is expected beach volleyball will be held in Birmingham city centre.

    The government is expanding its refugee resettlement programme to take in another 5,000 refugees - but one question is what happens to those refugees once they are settled.

    A programme at Aston Business School is helping them start their own business. Muhammad Al Mahameed from the project was on BBC Radio 4's Today.

    He said economic integration - including starting a business - plays "really a significant role" in social integration.

    "When you feel valued that you are in the market, that you are outside working and integrating with the people and talking to the people all those skills where the government and other non-governmental organisations... are trying to get refugees to integrate in our society can be achieved though business or setting up businesses for entrepreneurs."

    A Birmingham immunologist is warning that misinformation about the MMR vaccination could lead to an outbreak of measles in the UK.

    Dr Aayesha Hassan is working with the Somali community in the city to tackle lower vaccination rates.

    A pet cat has been shot dead with a crossbow in Redditch.

    Stewie, who was just 19 months old, was found on Saturday morning with the bolt in its neck in the owner's back garden on Appletree Lane.

    The RSPCA says it is investigating and warned the culprits could face up a fine or up to six months in jail.

  9. Archdiocese admits 'failing victims of sex abuse'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    The Archdiocese of Birmingham says it accepts it "failed the victims and survivors or abuse" and apologised for "the grievous failings" of the past.

    It is responding to a report by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse which concluded children could have been saved from abuse if the Church had focused less on its reputation.

    In a statement, the archdiocese said it would now review the report thoroughly and gave assurances it had "already fundamentally changed its practices and processes to ensure an open and compassionate approach to victims and survivors".

    Thunderstorms are set to bring more travel disruption and possible flooding across the whole of the West Midlands at the beginning of next week.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for severe weather , externalstarting at 15:00 on Sunday until the end of Monday.

    Where thunderstorms do develop, 20 to 30mm rain may fall locally in an hour, and close to 40mm of rain may fall in two or three hours, it said.

  12. West Midlands fire services rated 'good'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    Both the West Midlands Fire Service and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have been rated as "good" by inspectors.

    They were among 16 to undergo their first inspection recently, external and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services has complained it has seen too much variation in the way they work around the country.

    Both local fire services are commended for the way they are run, but the inspectors did say Shropshire's fire service "needs to do better at protecting the public through fire regulation".

  15. Two arrested after man injured in 'violent disorder'published at 12:19 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    A man has suffered serious injuries following reports of disorder at an address in Birmingham, police say.

    The 50-year-old was taken to hospital after officers were called to Newton Road, Great Barr at about 00:30 said West Midlands Police.

    Two men, aged 29 and 26, were also taken to hospital but were later discharged.

    They were both arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remain in police custody.

    The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, has been accused of defending the reputation of the church rather than focusing on "the welfare of children and the impacts of child sexual abuse on victims and survivors", following an investigation into the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

    Cardinal Vincent Nichols was the Archbishop of Birmingham from 2000 to 2009.

    The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, which held six days of hearings last November and December, said there had been over 130 allegations of child sexual abuse made against 78 individuals associated with the Archdiocese since the mid 1930s.

    The inquiry concluded that "children could have been saved from abuse if the church had not been so determined to protect its own reputation above all else".

    Its report said "the lack of action" by the church meant "abusers were free to continue committing acts of child sexual abuse".
