    An aluminium cricket bat that was used by the Australian bowler Dennis Lillee in an Ashes match in 1979 has been sold for £5,200 at an auction in Malvern today.

    Lillee famously threw the bat away in anger after both the English and Australian captains objected to him using it.

  3. Listeria outbreak victim namedpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    A cancer patient whose death has been linked to the listeria outbreak has been named.

    Ian Hitchcock, 52, was being treated at Derby's Royal Hospital after being diagnosed with liver cancer last month.

    His family has reportedly said that he ate a contaminated sandwich.

    In all, five people have died from the outbreak, which has been traced back to ingredients used in sandwiches made by the Staffordshire-based Good Food Chain.

    Products have been withdrawn and production halted.

    The Food Standards Agency said its investigation was looking into the whole food supply chain.

  5. Rare bumblebee spotted on National Trust training daypublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    A team from the National Trust have discovered a rare bumblebee at a field in Worcestershire, while taking part in a training day.

    The Brown Banded Carder bee hasn't been seen in the county since 2010, but was spotted in fields near the National Trust's Croome Court

    The land has been planted with flowers attractive to bees, and staff and volunteers from the property were given training on how to identify bees by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

    They made the discovery after being set loose in the meadows to see what they could find.

    More surveys of the parkland are now planned.

    Five men have been arrested in Burton upon Trent on suspicion of drugs offences.

    Staffordshire Police said officers seized class A and B drugs, plus cash, after stopping three of the suspects just before midday yesterday in De Ferrers Croft.

    One was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant.

    Just after midday they stopped a car on St Mark's Road and arrested the other two men.

    Former Birmingham City manager Garry Monk, who was sacked after just over a year at the club, has says he's "disappointed" not have been given the opportunity to build on the "solid foundations" he and his team had laid at the club.

    The board said it made the decision with the club's long-term future in mind - adding that its hopes a new boss can adopt a "fresh and modern footballing philosophy".

    Monk helped Blues avoid relegation after arriving at St Andrew's in March 2018 and then took them towards the play-offs last season.

    Thanking the players, staff and supporters in a statement issued today on Twitter , externalhe went on to say he was "aware of certain disappointing comments the club has made in the wake of my dismissal".

    But "mindful of contractural obligations" he said he would rather focus on the "many positives" experienced at the club.

  10. Police restraint inquest jury sent out to consider verdictpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    The jury has been sent out to consider its verdict at the inquest of a man who died in hospital, days after being restrained by police.

    Darren Cumberbatch, who was 32, died of multiple organ failure in George Eliot Hospital on 19 July 2017.

    Earlier the inquest heard that police had been called to a probation hostel in Nuneaton on 10 July after staff reported Mr Cumberbatch was acting "oddly, running around and shouting".

    The inquest was also told a taser, incapacitating spray and batons were used to restrain him and when he was taken to hospital, Mr Cumberbatch told medical staff he had taken cocaine.

  11. Probe into wall collapse to conclude by the end of the yearpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    An investigation into the collapse of part of Ludlow's ancient town walls is expected to be concluded by the end of the year.

    A structural engineer has been commissioned to carry-out preliminary investigations into the site at St Laurence’s churchyard.

    A 33ft (10m) stretch of Ludlow's historic town wall collapsed in February 2013, damaging a car and several garages.

    Sections of the wall date back 800 years, and a series of collapses over the years has cost about £1m in repair bills.

    The 5G mobile phone network was used for the first time in the UK today, to show how the new technology can help the NHS to transform the lives of some patients.

    A remote controlled ultrasound scan was performed live on the public network.

    Paramedics will soon be able to relay video of a patient back to a surgeon miles away.

    The 5G coverage is set to improve, with emergency services getting priority access.

    Crews are facing a growing number of tumble dryer and washing machine fires, according to Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service.

    It said there have been more than 30 of them in the county this year and it's urging people to keep an eye out for recall or safety notices about their products.

    A man has been charged with dangerous driving following a six-minute police chase across Birmingham.

    It's alleged the 36-year-old broke into a Moseley property and stole a VW Polo before forcing entry to two homes in Oldbury.

    The driver then failed to stop for officers during a pursuit that ended in Priory Road, in the Edgbaston area of the city at about 03:00 on Tuesday, said West Midlands Police.

    He has also been charged in connection with five further burglaries across Birmingham, Sandwell and Dudley.

  17. Hydrogen train runs on 'fully green fuel'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

    A hydrogen train that's undergoing trials in he West Midlands, is a "Mini power station on wheels", according to project director Alex Burrows from the University of Birmingham.

    The Hydroflex train does not emit harmful gases, instead using hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, water and heat.

    It is "a fully green fuel", says Helen Simpson from rail rolling stock company Porterbrook, which created the Hydroflex in partnership with Birmingham University's centre for Railway Research.

    A research project collecting the stories of refugees from the Middle East and Africa about their journeys to safety, has inspired a new piece of work by an international artist.

    Salma Zulfiqar used the stories collected by the University of Warwick's Professor Vicki Squire from her Crossing the Mediterranean Sea by Boat, external project, highlighting the effects of EU migration policies on refugees.

    The artwork Routes to Peace? represents 10 of the women as "peace doves" carrying stories - while visitors to the exhibition can also listen to audio recordings.

    Routes to Peace? is on display at the Library of Birmingham until 19 July as part of an exhibition , externalcelebrating Refugee Week 2019.
