A new four-star hotel could be built in Coventry in time for it to take on the City of Culture title in 2021.
The city council is set to spend more than £1m preparing land for a developer to build a Hotel Indigo at Friargate.
The land for the hotel sits opposite the council's headquarters - and would be handed over to developer Wylam at a discount to try and kickstart the development.
The hotel would have about 100 bedrooms, along with a fine dining restaurant and themed bars, the council said.

A passenger in a Ford Fiesta, which crashed shortly after it failed to stop, died in hospital.

A man has died after his car hit a tree in Warwickshire, West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) said.
Emergency services were called to Straight Mile in Bourton on Dunsmore at 02:26.
"On arrival, crews discovered a car that had suffered significant damage after crashing into a tree," a WMAS spokesperson said.
“There was one patient, a man, who was still inside the vehicle.
“Sadly, on assessment of the patient, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

A pony rescue centre devastated by a huge fire has taken to social media to thank people for their support as they start the clean-up.
A faulty generator was blamed by Staffordshire Fire Service, external for the blaze which swept through Elverra Pony Rescue, near Eccleshall, on 12 August.
On Facebook, the centre says clean up efforts have started, external, adding that staff have been "jaw dropped by how generous people have been, external".
Donations have topped £6,500 on a crowdfunding page set up to rebuild the animal shelter.

A 34-year-old man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a woman was killed in a crash following a police chase.
The 28-year-old woman died in hospital after the blue Ford Fiesta she was travelling in, which had failed to stop for officers, struck another car in Crocketts Road, Birmingham, on Saturday night.
Unemployed Adrian Paskin, of no fixed address, is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court later today, West Midlands Police said.
He also faces charges of driving with no insurance and driving without a licence.

The mother of a boy who has travelled the length of Britain by bus for charity says she "could not be prouder".
Ryley O'Shaughnessy from Stourbridge, who has autism, loves the vehicles so much he set himself the challenge of travelling by them from John O' Groats to Land's End.
Travelling with his grandmother, the 10-year-old completed the trip in 23 days on 60 different buses and raised more than £1,000 for the National Autistic Society.
His mum, Laura Rock, said it was "just a brilliant thing to do" while Ryley added "I still love buses".
This morning's crash involving a car and a tram in Wolverhampton has caused disruption that's likely to last the rest of the day.
West Midlands Metro services are not going beyond The Royal in Wolverhampton and advised passengers to either walk into the city centre from there or use rail services.
Buses are also disrupted, and the National Express 79 route is only going as far as The Crescent.
Virgin Trains and West Midlands Railway are accepting tram passes to get passengers to Wolverhampton.

She was taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton in a stable condition after being cut free from the car.
The ambulance service said crews also treated three tram passengers, as well as the tram driver, for minor injuries and all were discharged at the scene.
“Two women, who were passengers, were treated for the effects of shock, whilst a man, also a passenger, was treated for non-serious injuries," a spokesperson said. "All three were discharged at the scene."

A man's been charged with rape, external after a woman was attacked in Stafford, police have said.
The assault took place yesterday morning on Newport Road, near the Tesco store.
The 29-year-old's been charged with rape and assaulting a female by penetration and is due to appear before magistrates today.
Belinda Rose was discovered with fatal stab wounds at a house in Birmingham.

A crowdfunding page set up in aid of a police officer run over with his own car has passed its initial target of £10,000.
PC Gareth Phillips, 42, is still in hospital after he suffered potentially life-changing injuries when he stopped a suspected stolen car on Moorcroft Road, Moseley, Birmingham, earlier this month.
A man's appeared in court charged with offences including attempted murder and is due at the city's crown court next month.
Nearly 800 people have pledged money and organisers have raised the target now to £15,000.
The driver of the tram that was involved in the crash in Wolverhampton this morning has been treated for minor injuries, West Midlands Fire Service said.
Three passengers on the service, which was carrying 25 people, were also treated at the scene.
The tram was involved in a crash with a car just after 09:00 at the Bilston Street roundabout, causing long delays in the area.
A woman had to be freed from the car by firefighters using cutting equipment, the fire service said.
