  1. Hospitals to get 176 extra nurses from Indiapublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Hospitals in Shrewsbury and Telford will get another 176 nurses from India from December.

    It follows a meeting with the Indian Consul in Birmingham, organised by Telford and Wrekin Council. Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTh) thanked it and Shropshire Council for their support.

    SaTh said it was still short of being fully staffed, but recruitment campaigns were continuing and it recently visited Dublin to look for more recruits there.

    Barbara Beal, the trust's director of nursing and midwifery, said it was "very important that our nurses feel welcome and we are doing everything we can to ensure they feel at home when they arrive".

  2. Lost fragments of 'blockbuster' medieval poem discoveredpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    The oldest surviving fragments of a 13th Century French poem have been discovered in Worcester.

    Le Roman de la Rose tells the romantic adventures of a medieval courtier and the hand-written pages were found in the archives of the Diocese of Worcester, the University of Bristol said.

    The pages were discovered by professor Nicholas Vincent from the University of East Anglia, who asked professor Marianne Ailes (pictured below) from the University of Bristol to confirm their identity.

    They aren't in great condition, but she said they are "something very special and unique" and include some lines from the end of the story, which have previously been missing.

    The complete story, which was written by two authors is 22,000 lines long, and the University of Bristol said it contains "one of medieval European literature’s best-known sex scenes".

  4. Ice hockey: Scottish road-trip for Coventry Blazepublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Coventry Blaze will be playing back-to-back games in Scotland this weekend and head coach Danny Stewart said it helped to have the fixtures grouped together like this because it helps "to take travel out of the equation".

    They face Dundee Stars tomorrow and Glasgow Clan on Sunday. "We're facing two teams that are scoring a lot of goals," Stewart said.

    Coventry have three Elite League wins so far this season, but Stewart said he was pleased with their performances and that they could have had more wins if some moments had gone their way.

  5. JLR calls for 'frictionless' trade as MPs vote on EU dealpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Jaguar Land Rover has said it's important the new Brexit deal "protects tariff-free and frictionless trade and guarantees a level playing field on critical areas of regulation and immigration."

    But a statement from the company said it was still considering the details of the latest deal would not be commenting further until MPs vote on it tomorrow.

    Boris Johnson's deal commits Britain and the EU to work towards a Free Trade Agreement and also says the UK and the EU should "uphold the common high standards... in the areas of state aid, competition, social and employment standards, environment, climate change, and relevant tax matters".

    Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders welcomed the deal, and said it "moves us further away from a damaging no-deal Brexit" but he was also cautious about possible future regulation.

    He added: "To give the UK automotive industry certainty, however, and to assure its continued global competitiveness, we need a truly ambitious future relationship – one based on tariff-free and frictionless trade."

  6. Footpath reopens after man killed by falling treepublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    A footpath where a man was killed by a falling tree is going to fully reopen today after safety works were carried out.

    Neville Scattergood, 58, from Stafford, was killed on a footpath on the Isabel Trail, off Eccleshall Road, in the town, on 3 October.

    An inquest into his death's been opened and adjourned and it is also being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.

    Staffordshire County Council said staff had inspected the trail and, while minor works would be carried out next week, barriers were being removed today.

    Officers are investigating a burglary at the property but are not linking it to a spate of other break-ins.

  8. Murder probe police name victim as Wayne Coventrypublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    A man who was killed at a house on Humphrey Avenue in Bromsgrove on Monday has been formally identified as 36-year-old Wayne Coventry.

    West Mercia Police has arrested a 37-year-old woman from Birmingham on suspicion of his murder.

    Officers were initially called to reports of a seriously injured man at the address at around 22:00.

    Worcester Warriors have made four changes to their starting line up for tomorrow's Premiership opener against Leicester Tigers at Sixways.

    Ashley Beck (pictured below) will play in the centre as he continues his comeback from a broken leg that led to him missing most of last season.

  12. Thousands made in county line drugs deals per daypublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Earlier we reported on a week of action by forces across the region against so-called county lines, that see drugs ferried from cities to market towns.

    The BBC was given access to the West Midlands Police Regional Organised Crime Unit , externalas it tried to crack down on drugs gangs and traffickers.

    At least one county line drugs operation was suspected to be moving drugs from Birmingham to Droitwich, in Worcestershire.

    Arrest

    This single line is making £4,000 per day, police believe.

    The team followed the drugs to their destination and lay in wait for the dealers.

    Eventually, a car was picked up by an automatic number plate reading camera outside Birmingham, heading to the area.

    The suspects reportedly switched cars before police mounted a high-speed "hard stop" on a busy rural road and arrested them.

    The new owners of Kidderminster Harriers say they're committed to keeping the club at its Aggborough Stadium home "for the foreseeable future".

    The club revealed yesterday it had been sold to a group of local business people, external, headed up by Richard Lane.

    As well as their commitment to Aggborough, the new owners say they want to further develop the stadium by making more money from local firms.

    Their aim is to make it self-sustainable as well as achieve more success on the pitch.

    A council is calling for stronger laws around the fittings of sprinklers, following a devastating fire at a retirement complex.

    The apartments at Beechmere, Crewe,were destroyed in a blaze which swept through the building on 8 August.

    After the fire, Cheshire Fire Service said it had spread quickly, external "at an unusual pace" and there weren't sprinklers in the building.

    Cheshire East councillors agreed last night to ask the government to change the law so sprinklers are included in more new buildings.

    It follows a similar call from the London Fire Brigade, which wants sprinklers to be mandatory in all buildings housing vulnerable and elderly people, and on flats over six-storeys.

    People on a street in the West Midlands are being asked not to keep trying to recycle a road bollard.

    Sandwell Council's tweeted , externalto say the equipment "somehow kept making its way into someone's recycling bin".

    It hasn't revealed which street but have retrieved it from the bin as "unfortunately it can't be recycled".
