    A woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a 21-month-old girl was badly injured in a house fire, police say.

    The child is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after the incident at a property in Cattell Way, Bedworth on Sunday afternoon.

    Police attended along with firefighters and paramedics after receiving the report shortly before 14:20.

    Det Ch Insp Tim Sharp from Warwickshire Police said: “We’ve launched a thorough investigation into the fire and our thoughts are with the injured girl and her family at this time.

    “We’re appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch, especially if they’ve got mobile phone or dash cam footage of the incident.”

  2. Teaching 'reviewed' over claims of inappropriate contentpublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 21 October 2019

    A programme for primary pupils in Warwickshire teaching about relationships is to be reviewed, said the county council, following claims some of it is inappropriate for younger pupils.

    Speaking in Parliament last week Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said the All About Me programme "goes well beyond statutory guidance" from the Department for Education.

    The Conservative MP said he had been contacted by "concerned parents" who believe that some of the material is not appropriate.

    "I understand that Warwickshire County Council is urgently reviewing this programme, " he said in a statement.

    "I hope that the outcome of that will be to reassure parents that what is being taught to their children is suitable for their age.”

    Warwickshire County Council said: "These resources are fully researched, evidence based and in line with the department for education guidelines.

    "The council considers all comments carefully and so we will be reviewing this content."

    A man's still being questioned by police after being arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of a body at a property.

    Staffordshire Police said the man, who is aged in his 50s, was found in Wigmore Place in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, at about 17:00 on Thursday.

    His death is being treated as unexplained.

    The force said a 41-year-old man from the Stoke-on-Trent area was arrested on Friday night and remains in police custody on Monday morning.

    One in five trains operated by West Midlands Railway are failing to arrive on time, according to the latest figures from Network Rail.

    It's the worst performance since the company took over running the trains nearly two years ago.

    In the last month, almost 10% of trains have been cancelled and passengers have complained about increased levels of delays and cancellations.

    The company says complexities running a new timetable and historic staff holiday arrangements are to blame.

    A woman has been threatened with a hammer after thieves broke into her home, police say.

    The two demanded money before searching the property and making off with her mobile phone.

    It happened at an address on Medley Grove, Leamington Spa on Thursday 17 October, said Warwickshire Police.

    The victim, a woman in her 60s, was not injured but left shaken following the incident, the force added.

    Sudden spikes in air pollution in the UK trigger hundreds more heart attacks, strokes and acute asthma attacks on those days, research suggests.

    In Birmingham, high-pollution days caused an extra 21 cardiac arrests on average, 27 additional admissions for stroke and 26 adults ending up in hospital with asthma-related issues.

    Of the nine cities studied, it was the second highest after London.

    The King's College research also suggests cutting air pollution by a fifth would decrease incidents of lung cancer by between 5% and 7% across the nine cities.

    Four more people have been arrested in connection with a of string of burglaries which targeted older people in the Black Country.

    Twenty-nine burglaries took place in nine days across the region, police said.

    Masked men stole jewellery from two women, aged 75 and 87, in Wolverhampton and Walsall. Other addresses were also targeted, police said.

    Two men aged 22 and another aged 19 were arrested in the Wrexham area of Wales on Saturday along with another aged 30 on Sunday, said West Midlands Police.

    Four men who were arrested on 17 October have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

  12. Worker breaks pelvis in fairground ride fallpublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 21 October 2019

    Investigations are continuing at a fairground after a worker fell at a fairground ride he was helping to build.

    The 21-year-old fell 30ft (9m) from the ride at the site off Lichfield Street in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent at about 15:15 on Saturday, police said.

    He suffered two broken wrists and a broken pelvis, the force said.

    Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are due to continue investigations today.

    Scenes at Saturday's Birmingham City match against Leeds have been described as "disgraceful".

    Birmingham fans clashed with police and stewards at the final whistle and then there was a "public order incident" in the coach park, the force said.

    Officers made 11 arrests, said West Yorkshire Police.

    Two people have been arrested after shots were fired in Birmingham on Sunday.

    A 17-year-old who went to hospital shortly after the incident remains in a stable condition, police say, although it is not known if he had gun shot injuries.

    Archibald Road at the junction of Finch Road in Lozells remains closed after the incident which happened during the early hours.

    A 27-year-old man and two 17-year-olds have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon, said West Midlands Police.

    A motorist had to be cut free from his vehicle after a collision with a lorry in Staffordshire.
