  17. Origins of spooky chained oak questionedpublished at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2019

    BBC Radio Stoke

A playwright thinks there might be a logical reason why an old oak tree in Staffordshire is tied up with chains.

The most common story is that the Earl of Shrewsbury was on his way home through Dinningsdale Wood, when he was stopped by a beggar, but he refused to pay her.

She cursed him and said whenever a branch fell from the oak, a member of his family would die, so he had the branches chained up, to prevent this ever happening.

But Dan Weatherer believes it the truth might be that it was simply to prevent noise pollution - he said it could have been chained up to stop the tree creaking and groaning on windy nights.
