A West Mercia Police officer who’s been charged with the murder of footballer Dalian Atkinson, has been granted bail.

One officer has been charged with murder and the other with causing actual bodily harm.

At Birmingham Crown Court today Judge Simon Drew has ruled that we cannot disclose the names and addresses of the officers, after the defence claimed they could be at risk if their identities were known.

It turns out that risk assessments have been carried out, but these were unavailable in court.

The judge said ultimately granting the pair anonymity would be “almost unprecedented”, but that he had a duty to consider the submissions.

The matter will be discussed again in court on Wednesday.

He particularly came under fire after admitting on live TV that he hadn't read the school books he was quoting.

He was formally reprimanded by Labour after he was seen in a video agreeing with the demonstrators.

In a statement, he accused a "militant activist segment within the LGBT network," of carrying out a "vicious and vindictive campaign of character assassination" against him.

"Because I have always put the interests of my constituents above everything else and I don't succumb to threats I have supported the rights of parents to have a say, not a veto, over how the most sensitive aspects of the Equality Act are taught to young children."

Nominations for the seat close on 14 November, after which a full list of candidates will be published on the BBC's Hall Green constituency page.
