    X-ray baggage scanners and metal detectors will be used to search visitors and staff entering HMP Hewell.

    The new security measures are expected to be in place by spring next year.

    The prison, near Redditch, is among a few selected to implement the new security measures.

    The measures form part of a government package to stop drugs, phones and weapons being smuggled behind bars.

    Earlier this year the HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) said 70% of inmates claimed drugs were easy to obtain at the prison, with a quarter of inmates developing drug habits.

  2. Woman 'critical' after M6 crashpublished at 10:27 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2019

    A woman has been taken to hospital in a critical condition following a crash on the M6 this morning.

    The northbound carriageway remains closed from J14 to J15 in Staffordshire.

    Paramedics were called to reports of a three-car collision in the contraflow shortly after 07:00, said the ambulance service.

    A man in his 40s was also taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

    A pharmacist from London has been selected to be Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Coventry North West.

    It follows concerns voiced by retiring MP Geoffrey Robinson that the campaign to select a successor had been "shambolic and underhand".

    He said some local party members were concerned a Labour candidate would be parachuted in from London.

    Taiwo Owatemi beat local union rep Des Arthur in a vote on Saturday.

    A project to plant 550 trees across Coventry is to be completed today.

    It's being led by the Sikh Union and will involve hundreds of schoolchildren planting trees in Longford park.

    The scheme is to honour the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

    "This disposal is in line with the Wolverhampton company's plans to reduce its debt in part through the disposal of certain non-core assets," the company said.

    Ralph Findlay, chief executive, said: "We are making good progress with our plans to reduce our net debt by £200m by 2023 in part through the disposal of non-core assets.

    A fire broke out in a first floor flat in Biddulph, Staffordshire.

    Crews were called to the blaze on Congleton Road shortly before 22:00.

    Crews managed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining properties, said Staffordshire Fire service.

    There are hour long delays in the area, said Highways England.

    The boy was on a bike when it clashed with the car in Coleshill Road, Ansley Common, near Nuneaton, on Saturday.

    A man arrested in connection with the crash was later released while inquiries continue.

    The inquest is taking place in Stafford and is expected to last all week.

    She said her page had been suspended a number of times by the social media giant for displaying sexual content.

    Facebook said the content was "removed in error" and had been "restored".
