  1. Archie Spriggs: Boy's murder 'could not have been foreseen'published at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2019
    Breaking

A coroner has said none of the authorities involved with the family of Archie Spriggs could have foreseen the seven-year-old's murder by his mother.

He was killed in Shropshire in 2017 and at an inquest earlier, a verdict of unlawful death was recorded.

At a criminal trial last year, Archie's mother, Lesley Speed, was jailed for at least 18 years, having murdered her son during a bitter custody battle. The judge accepted she had a "chronic" mental illness.

Archie's father, Matthew Spriggs, had claimed authorities dismissed his concerns about his son's safety and missed opportunities to prevent his death.

A deal to buy a landmark building in Wolverhampton has been withdrawn by a local university due to "mounting costs".

The University of Wolverhampton said it had expressed a "strong interest" in buying the Beatties building.

The 142-year-old store, on Victoria Street, is shutting up shop after parent company House of Fraser went into administration in August.

While Frasers, a new concept from the retail stable of Sports Direct's Mike Ashley, is coming to the city, it will take over a spot in the Mander Centre that Debenhams vacates in January. That left the university planning to make use of an empty Victoria Street site nearby.

A "lengthy due diligence" process had been entered into with administrators, said the university, but the decision had since been taken to "withdraw from the process".

A statement said: "This is not a decision we have taken lightly but is due to the subsequent mounting costs of having to refurbish the building due to its infrastructure, the risk was too high when considering the wider university and our commitment to our future vision."

Research by Birmingham and Sheffield universities suggests by the time women are 46, half will have been a carer. But with men, researchers find that it isn't until they reach the age of 57 that they have the same 50-50 likelihood.

The research suggests two-thirds of UK adults can expect to become an unpaid carer during their lifetimes.

Julie Hambleton, whose sister Maxine was one of the those killed, said the investigation "could and should be passed on to an independent force".

West Midlands Police says its investigation is "live and active".
