    There are calls for the Conservative candidate for Ludlow, Philip Dunne, to be suspended from the party over comments which opponents described as "racist" at a hustings event in Church Stretton last night.

    Mr Dunne told the Labour candidate Kuldip Sahota he was "talking through his turban".

    Mr Sahota said he was insulted and offended by the comment made and is understood to have raised his concerns publicly from the stage.

    Labour's Tan Dhesi, who was the first turban wearing Sikh MP, described it as a "disgusting, racist remark" and called for Mr Dunne to be suspended from the Conservative party.

    The Liberal Democrat candidate Heather Kidd said it was "utterly unacceptable" adding that Mr Dunne should made a public apology.

    The other candidate standing in the Ludlow constituency is the Green Party's Hilary Wendt.

    Temperatures are set to drop overnight, with a yellow warning for ice in place for the whole of the West Midlands from 00:15 to 10:00 on Friday.

  3. Officers injured after masked robberypublished at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Two police officers were injured while attempting to stop masked offenders who had targeted a property in Nuneaton.

    The robbers fled in a car after the incident at about 21:20 in Highfield Road.

    Both officers were taken to hospital, one suffering a minor head injury and the other an injured hand.

    They were both later discharged and stayed on duty, said Warwickshire Police.

    Port Vale owner Carol Shanahan says she hopes local people will get priority when tickets go on sale for Robbie Williams's charity gig at Stoke-on-Trent's Vale Park stadium next year.

    She revealed she'd started the process of getting the necessary licensing permission for "low key" events at the stadium, joking, "you could get no further away from low key than this one."

    The singer announced yesterday that fans who buy his Christmas album will get early access to tickets.

    A man had to be cut free from a vehicle that crashed in Drayton Basset, Staffordshire.

    Emergency services were called to Coleshill Road shortly after 08:30, said the ambulance service.

    The driver was taken to hospital suffering injuries not thought to be serious.

    The initiative, launched by the Football Association, is particularly aimed at men, and will be visible through all levels of men's and women's football in England this season.

    In partnership with mental health charity Heads Together, the campaign will "harness the influence and popularity of football" to "show the world that mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness," the FA said.

    It's the club's first royal visit for 88 years.

    West Bromwich Albion bounced back to the top of the Championship table with their biggest win of the season last night beating Bristol City 4-1.

    First-half goals from returning full-back Kieran Gibbs and Matheus Pereira set Albion on course to stretch their unbeaten run to eight games - and their goal tally to 35 in 18 matches.

    Slaven Bilic's Baggies now lead second-placed Leeds United by two points again, but have opened up a seven-point gap on the play-off pack.

    Albion coach Bilic said his players deserved plenty of praise.

    "We played really good. To win 4-1 against a side like Bristol City, it had to be a good performance. They are a very solid team. But we made them not solid enough.

    "I was very proud of the way we managed the game. We showed resilience and quality without the ball, but to attack with the numbers we do give more players the chance to score goals."

    A number of metal structures at Rugeley power station are going to be demolished with a controlled explosion this morning.

    Staffordshire Police warned people to expect "some loud bangs" at around 10:00, but said "it should be over very quickly".

    The power station closed in 2016 and there are plans to build more than 2,000 homes on the site.

  10. Three arrested as man hospitalised amid park 'disorder'published at 09:03 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    A two-day dispersal order has been put in place for a Staffordshire park following reports of a robbery and disorder on Wednesday afternoon.

    Amid reports of an assault by youths in Clough Hall Park, Kidsgrove, a man was taken to hospital.

    A 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and resisting arrest.

    Two 16-year-old boys have also been arrested on suspicion of robbery, says Staffordshire Police.

    Officers are investigating whether other incidents in the Kidsgrove area and Newcastle College on Wednesday are connected.

    A Warwickshire police officer has been sacked after misleading victims while investigating allegations of aggression towards two women.

    A misconduct hearing, which concluded on Wednesday, found PC Nikki Wardle, who was working at Bedworth station, breached the policing standards of professional behaviour in relation to honesty and integrity and duties and responsibilities.

    The hearing found she had claimed to have spoken to the suspect about the incident when she had not done so, and also declined to let the complainants make statements.

    Supt Warren Little, head of Warwickshire Police Professional Standards Department, said: "PC Wardle’s actions in the investigation fell well below the standards we expect of our officers."

    The outcome of the misconduct hearing was subject to the normal appeals process, said the force.

    A man has been found with stab wounds in Coventry, police say.

    The ambulance service called officers to Croft Road in the city centre at 18:05 on Wednesday.

    The extent of the man's injuries are not known at this stage, according to West Midlands Police.
