  1. Cathedral asks people to adopt a piece of historypublished at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2019

    Worcester Cathedral is asking people to adopt a part of the building, to help pay for its conservation and running costs.

    The current cathedral can trace its history back to 1084 and the items up for adoption range in price from £25 to £500.

    The items in the cathedral's adoption brochure, external include panels from the stained glass windows, decorative stonework and carved woodwork.

    Those adopting one of the items get a photo, a certificate and a dedication in the cathedral's donors' book.

  3. Road to remain closed after burst main wrecks surfacepublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2019

    A Ludlow road that was badly damaged by a burst water pipe on Monday will remain closed until Saturday afternoon.

    Severn Trent Water had to fully close the A4117 near the junction with the A49, because of difficulties digging down to the pipe, but said the repair has now been completed.

    However, Shropshire Council said work to fix "extensive consequential damage the road" would continue.

    About 10 customers were affected by the burst pipe.

    Two people who died in the London Bridge attack were both stabbed in the chest, an inquest's heard today.

    Saskia Jones, 23, from Stratford-upon-Avon, and Jack Merritt, 25, were both graduates of Cambridge University and were attacked on Friday during a prisoner rehabilitation event.

    The inquests were opened and adjourned today at the Old Bailey and heard Ms Jones graduated with a master's in criminology and had applied to join West Midlands Police.

    A date's yet to be fixed for when the full inquests will take place.

    Former England captain Bob Willis has died at the age of 70.

    The fast bowler took 325 wickets in 90 Tests from 1971 to 1984, claiming a career-best 8-43 to help England to a famous win over Australia at Headingley in the 1981 Ashes.

    He captained England in 18 Tests and 29 one-day internationals before his retirement from all cricket in 1984.

    Willis represented Surrey for the first two years of his professional career before spending 12 years at Warwickshire, finishing with 899 wickets from 308 first-class matches at an average of 24.99.

    The Conservatives have promised £4.2bn of new spending on local train, bus and tram services if they win the 12 December general election.

    They've said local authorities would also be expected to put money towards the schemes which could include extending the West Midlands Metro tram, including to Solihull and Birmingham Airport.

    Labour's called the announcement "pathetic" and repeated their pledge to slash rail fares by a third and reinstate 3,000 bus routes.

    The largest opposition party's also been in Birmingham today, as shadow chancellor John McDonnell outlined his party's pledges on inequality.

    While on transport, the Liberal Democrats have promised to invest more in buses, trams and railways, while encouraging walking and cycling to protect the environment.

    Plenty of memories have come pouring in about Birmingham's Irish Centre after it announced its city venue was closing after 50 years.

    Managers announced it would be moving from Digbeth to Kings Heath, more than a mile away, amid disagreements over regeneration with the city council.

    On the BBC Midlands Facebook page, Sean O'Donnell posted, external: "Had some great craic down there many a time. Saw some great bands as well."

    Janet Susan Barnes added, external: "My mother-in-law used to work on the door in the 80s, so sad to see it close."

    Davey Keogh wrote, external: "Great days, I’ve been performing there since 1970s. My whole childhood was centred around the Irish Centre. Sad old times and the end of an era."

    A man who died when his car was involved in a crash with a car transporter has been named by police.

    Laxman Swali's Peugeot was involved in the crash near Shareshill, south of Cannock, Staffordshire, on Monday afternoon, police said. , external

    The 28-year-old, from Wolverhampton, died at the scene.

  11. How to bring down power station cooling towerspublished at 15:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2019

    We now know a little more about how the four cooling towers at Ironbridge Power Station will be demolished on Friday.

    Shaun Hockley, the operations director for The Harworth Group, said engineers had rigged the explosives so the fourth tower will fall on to the third tower and the third tower will fall into the second tower.

    But the first and second towers won't fall into each other, because of concerns that could damage an underground cable, between them.

    In preparation for the demolition, 1,750 holes have been drilled into the cooling towers, for the explosives to be placed.

    A volunteer food club where people pay £4 a week to fill their cupboards has had an "overwhelming response" since it launched, organisers say.

    Bethel Church set up the Manna House Pantry on Vicarage Road, Halesowen.

    The "social supermarket" gets food donated by local churches and supermarkets and members can then buy it at a fraction of the price in shops.

    The pantry launched on 2 December and organisers said they'd reached membership capacity just a day later, , externalforcing them to stop accepting new applications for the time being.

  14. Telford sex abuse trial: 'No teacher intervened'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2019

    A woman allegedly traded between men and sexually abused as a youngster said "not one teacher" intervened when she was called names at school, a court's heard.

    The victim said she was forced to perform sex acts in a churchyard and violently abused when she tried to refuse the men's advances.

    The offences are alleged to have happened in Telford, Shropshire, and started when the girl, now an adult, was 12.

    Five men are on trial at Birmingham Crown Court and all deny wrongdoing.

    The trial continues.

    Police are looking for four men suspected of badger baiting after a dog walker spotted them acting suspiciously with dogs.

    They were seen on land off Audley Road, near Alsager Park, Cheshire, on 19 November, the RSPCA said.

    The dog walker saw them digging in an area where there was a badger sett and they ran off when he shouted at them, reports say.

    The RSPCA's released still images of the four suspects who they want to identify.
