  6. Hospice shop broken into and cash taken from safepublished at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    Thieves have broken into a charity shop in Telford and taken cash from the safe.

    Severn Hospice said the burglary happened last night and the shop in Lawley has been closed while staff tidy up.

    Shop manager Gary Stephan said: "It’s hard to comprehend why anyone would steal from a charity shop which serves the community, especially at Christmas.”

    It was made by Stephanie Stanley, who said it took her about 45 minutes to craft.

    "I was trying to think of something out of the box that's going to be different and stand out," she said. "I thought the oranges would look great on the black as well."

    Coventry Blaze have a new netminder - 28-year-old CJ Motte from the United States.

    He joins them from HC Innsbruck in the Austrian league and will replace Canadian Jamie Phillips, who is leaving the club after playing 33 times in the Elite League this season.

    Motte has previously played in the American Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League.

    Head coach Danny Stewart said Phillips had been a "model professional" but that the club "simply just decided to move in a different direction."

    Motte will make his Blaze debut on Saturday against Guildford Flames.

    A cycle route between Kenilworth and Leamington is going to go ahead, after Warwickshire councillors agreed to set aside £4.75m to pay for it.

    The 5km (3.1 miles) cycleway will include a bridge over the River Avon.

    More than 3,000 people had signed a petition in support of the cycle route and work is expected to start in the spring of 2022.

    Aston Villa will face a young Liverpool side in the League Cup quarter-final tonight, but goalkeeper Tom Heaton said "whoever comes out, we know it will be a tough test."

    Liverpool's senior squad are in Qatar for the World Club Championship, handing Villa a good chance to make the semi-finals.

    Villa are coming into the match off the back of three defeats and Heaton said Liverpool were a massive club and "they've got quality in depth".

    People living near Shrewsbury's old prison have been told their street will have to close for a year, while an old school is turned into luxury flats.

    Residents on Beacall's Lane in Castlefields say they weren't consulted and have been given no alternative place to park their cars.

    The councillor for the area, Alan Mosley, called the planned closure an "absolute shambles" and hoped an alternative plan could be agreed with the developers and Shropshire Council.

  13. Football fan fined and banned over racist abusepublished at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    A Stoke City football fan has been fined £310 and received a three-year football banning order after he racially abused a goalkeeper.

    Carl Mason, 53, of Franklyn Street, Stoke-on-Trent, admitted using racially aggravated threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause alarm or distress at Newcastle-under-Lyme Magistrates' Court following the incident at Stoke City stadium on 27 September.

    Two witnesses said hearing Mason shout abuse at the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper while watching the game with his son made them "angry".

    The Crown Prosecution Service said Mason had agreed what he had said was wrong and hurtful, and said he was ashamed of the racist comment he made.

    Woodland at the Weston Park estate in Staffordshire has been illuminated with coloured lights again this Christmas.

    It's the second year it's staged what it calls Enchanted Weston and the lights took about two weeks to set up.

    The woodland, originally designed by landscape architect Capability Brown, also features smoke canons, glitter balls, colour changing globes and flame-effect lamps along the mile-long walk.

    The estate said the light display lasts for nine days and it has sold around 1,000 tickets for each day.

  15. Police appeal after sexual assault at beauty spotpublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    Police are appealing for information after a dog walker reported being sexually assaulted at a beauty spot by a man who "smelled very strongly of urine".

    The woman, in her 30s, was walking her dog near the visitors centre in Lickey Hills between 07:30 and 08:00 GMT when she was attacked, West Mercia Police said.

    She sustained minor injuries and was left shaken following the incident, up a steep bank in the nearby woodland.

    Police said the suspect was wearing a coat and smelled strongly.

    The force said there would be extra patrols in the area to reassure the public.

  17. Man found dead in tent is identifiedpublished at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    A man who was found dead in a roadside tent in Wombourne yesterday has been identified by the police as 68-year-old Robert Keith White.

    Staffordshire Police said officers were called to Stourbridge Road at 13:20 and that his family have been told.

    The force also said he'd chosen to live in the tent and that it didn't think there were suspicious circumstances.

  18. Plans to spend millions on town centre approvedpublished at 16:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    Plans to spend more than £19m on Nuneaton town centre have been approved by Warwickshire County Council.

    The money, from the Capital Investment Fund, will pay for a new library, cafe and business centre.

    The development will be on Church Street, on the site where the current Wilkos, Powell House and the Royal Mail are based.

  19. Sibley hits half century in England tour matchpublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    Warwickshire's Dominic Sibley scored 58 for England in their tour match against a South Africa Invitational XI, and then retired.

    He opened the batting with Rory Burns and hit eight fours in his half-century, batting alongside Joe Denley.
