  2. Severn water levels 'high but falling'published at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time 24 December 2019

    Satellite pictures show water levels in the Severn floodplain remain high but are falling, according to the Environment Agency's Dave Throup.

    Several flood warnings, external remain in place for the River Severn, as well as a string of less serious flood alerts in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Warwickshire.

    Children and their families have been queuing to see a magical Christmas display near Crewe which is raising money for charity.

    Donations are going to Donna Louise Hospice for Children and Young People in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Weston Lights has raised £92,000 since it was started. It will remain open until 28 December.

    An Albanian man who was previously deported in 2018 after entering the UK illegally has been found hiding in a car boot, according to Warwickshire Police.

    • Birmingham's Chamberlain Square, which has been closed for more than four years, is to partly reopen in the new year. The first phase of the Paradise regeneration project at the site is nearly complete.

    • About 350 homeless people will be given a Christmas meal at Birmingham's New Street Station later. The event, on the station concourse, has been organised by Network Rail and the Midland Langar Seva Society.

    • Around 300 Christmas trees which were used to decorate Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market are being given away. People can pick them up outside the Apple store on New Street until 17:00.

    There are plans to build 93 homes on land in Ledbury.

    Connexus, formerly Herefordshire Housing, wants to build the new estate behind the Full Pitcher on New Street, where the town's cricket club used to be.

    An application, for a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes, has been submitted to Herefordshire Council, which is due to discuss it by 11 March.

    Telford Tigers have chosen to play Swindon Wildcats in the semi-finals of the National Cup.

    They finished first in the qualifying matches, giving them the right to pick the team they wanted to face at the end of January.

    Swindon are currently second in the National League table, nine points behind Telford and have lost three of their last four matches.

      The Environment Agency says river levels appear to be falling, after days of rain, but rivers remain high.

      It has flood warnings and flood alerts, external in place for parts of the River Severn in Worcestershire and flood alerts for rivers in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Warwickshire.

      A bit further south, the Met Office has a yellow warning for heavy rain and the Environment Agency's Dave Throup warned at the weekend that flood-plains in our region can't soak up any more.

      The sister of a murdered woman who was set on fire and left to die in a churchyard 25 years ago says her family is still suffering.

      Tracey Mertens, 31, met a "violent and horrific death" at Christ Church in Eaton, Cheshire, on 23 December 1994, police said.

      She suffered 95% burns and died 12 hours later.

      Officers believe two men were responsible for the killing and a £30,000 reward still stands.

      Sister Sharon Haworth said the mother-of-two must have been terrified.

      "She was such a kind person and she would have given anything for them to let her go back to her children. They didn't need to do that to her," she said.

      Police want to talk to these two men in connection with a robbery on Temple Street in Birmingham on Saturday.

      A driver has been taken to hospital after a crash involving a lorry on the Bridgnorth to Wolverhampton road.

      It happened at the junction of the A454 and Sandpits Lane at Hilton at around 13:50 and West Midlands Ambulance Service said the woman's injuries aren't thought to be serious.
