    With the decade drawing to a close, BBC News has drawn up a quiz to see how much you remember about what made the news in England from 2010 to 2019.

  2. Just one flood alert remains in West Midlandspublished at 18:11 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    As 2019 draws to a close, there's just one flood alert remaining, external in the West Midlands.

    It covers an area of the River Lugg near Lugwardine and the Environment Agency warned that while river levels were falling, they would remain high for several days.

    Back in October, parts of Herefordshire saw their worst flooding since 1998 and the River Wye was at its highest level since records began.

  3. New maternity unit lifted into placepublished at 18:00 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    A portable building which will replace Telford's existing maternity unit has been lowered into place by a crane.

    It will take mothers who would have gone to the Princess Royal Hospital's midwife-led unit and it is now sitting next to the specialist women and children's unit.

    The old maternity unit building, which is 30 years old, will be used for patients with acute conditions instead.

    And the move has been paid for with the help of £4m given to the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust to help it cope during the winter.

    The hospital said it hoped it would give women "the reassurance of being closer to the consultant-led unit".

    And the hospital's chief executive Paula Clark added: "I know that, to some people, the term ‘modular building’ conjures up images of the old demountable classrooms we had at school, but these modern facilities are about as far removed from that as you can imagine."

    The Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill has told fans "it's difficult to play football which is maybe more attractive when you're in our situation".

    They're just outside the Championship relegation zone on goal difference after their defeat to Fulham, but he said they'd shown "qualities that are going to move us up the league".

    Stoke play the two sides above them in the table, Derby and Huddersfield, in the coming weeks and O'Neill said the priority at the moment was "to get points on the board, to get to a level of comfort".

  5. Man appears in court on attempted murder chargepublished at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    A man has appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder after an 18-year-old was stabbed in Wellington on Friday.

    Mubasher Mehmood, 24, of Windsor Road, Wellington, was also charged with dangerous driving and possession of an offensive weapon and was remanded in custody, to appear before Shrewsbury Crown Court on 27 January.

    One officer suffered arm and shoulder injuries and the other had injuries to his face.

  7. Your comments: Mixed reaction to dads' playgroup ideapublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    We've been getting a lot of comments on the BBC Midlands Facebook pag, externale about the father-friendly playgroup started by two stay-at-home dads in Worcestershire.

    Sam Chatterley and Dan Rainsford started Cradle to Crayon, saying they sometimes felt isolated in groups dominated by mothers.

    And Victoria Elizabeth Oliver wrote: "This is a fab idea and always thought dads could do with a group like this."

    David JB felt something like this was needed and wrote: "Having had a lot of time off with my 18-month-old daughter recently, the sexism I have experienced towards men has been staggering. This is a fantastic idea."

    Not everyone was convinced though and Katie Clunn said: "I don’t agree that dads aren’t made to feel welcome at play groups. There’s a lot of groups that go above and beyond to be inclusive to all."

    And Victoria Harley was also surprised it was needed and commented: "Have to say I’ve never found this at baby groups. Us mums think it’s great when dads come along with their little ones. But if it makes them feel comfortable then why not."

    The New Saints are playing Cefn Druids for the second time in just five days tonight, after beating their near-neighbours 5-0 on Boxing Day.

    Second-place Connah's Quay Nomads are also in action and could overtake TNS at the top of the Welsh Premier League, if the Oswestry-based side fail to win.

    And could this be the night TNS striker Greg Draper equals the club's all-time goal scoring record?

    It is currently held by Mike Wilde, who scored 151 goals and Draper is on 149.

  10. 'Social supermarket' helps hundreds in Staffordpublished at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    Hundreds of people have signed up in five months to a scheme which takes surplus food from supermarkets to sell cheaply to people in food poverty.

    The County Stores Supermarket was started in July, external by volunteers in Stafford who say they're also stopping waste going to landfill.

    The "social supermarket" is membership-only and free for people on benefits, while everyone else pays £5.

    Organisers are now hoping to run basic cooking lessons next year to offer further help.

  13. Two police officers hurt in strugglepublished at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    Two people have been arrested after an attack on two police officers in Wolverhampton yesterday.

    They were assaulted after stopping two people acting suspiciously on a moped on the ring road at about 16:30.

    West Midlands Police said one officer had suffered arm and shoulder injuries in the struggle and the other suffered facial injuries, but neither were seriously hurt.

    A man in his 50s who went to help the officers was also only slightly hurt.

    The force said a 16-year-old boy and 36-year old man had been arrested in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of assault and firearms offences.

    They remain in police custody.

    Two lanes remain shut on the M6 near Walsall after a lorry spilt a load of contaminated waste across the motorway earlier this afternoon. , external

    Highways England had shut all lanes between J10 and J9 and the slip road at J10 from around 13:00 but two lanes have since been reopened.

    A new six-part drama's started on BBC One telling the story of the Profumo Affair through the eyes of the woman at the centre of it, Christine Keeler.

    The scandal remains one of the most enduring in modern British political history.

    The man the affair was named after, John Profumo, was the Conservative Secretary of State for War and also MP for Stratford-upon-Avon.
