  1. Radio station rebrand ahead of City of Culture 2021published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

    BBC local radio station BBC Coventry and Warwickshire is to be rebranded as BBC CWR, a return to its original name.

    The changes will take effect in early spring this year along with a change in the presenter schedule.

    Current breakfast show host Trish Adudu will host a new weekday programme The Cov Show focusing on the city ahead of its year as UK City of Culture.

    Phil Upton will move to breakfast which will now run from 06:30 until 10:00 weekdays.

    Editor Gareth Roberts says: “These exciting changes will give BBC CWR a fresh sound as we prepare for an important year - Trish and Phil are two of Cov’s best loved radio personalities and their new programmes will give listeners a front row seat for Coventry’s big moment as UK City of Culture”

  2. House of Lords 'could move to York or Birmingham'published at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

    If you missed this news over the weekend, the government is examining whether to move the House of Lords out of London, the Conservative party chairman has said.

    James Cleverly told Sky News the idea was among a "range of options" being considered to "reconnect" politics with voters outside of the capital.

    According to the Sunday Times, external, York and Birmingham have emerged as contenders to permanently host the upper chamber.

    But Labour MP Nadia Whittome described the idea as "superficial".

    A dog's been rescued from a fire at a car wash in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Firefighters were called to the business on High Street, Tunstall, at about 03:00 today, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said, external.

    They said the blaze was threatening nearby homes before they put it out.

    The dog's been taken to a vet for treatment and an investigation's being carried out into what causes the fire.

    Passengers using trains between Crewe and Derby are being warned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes until midday.

    National Rail Enquiries said , externala power cut had hit the signalling system between the stations and, while it has been restored, services are facing disruption.

    West Bromwich Albion defender Kyle Bartley says the agony of missing out in the play-offs on penalties to Villa last season, is a major driver in their promotion bid this season.

    Albion are hoping to extend their one-point lead at the top of the Championship, despite a run of four draws and one loss in their past five games.

    "We had a really good start to the season," said the former Arsenal youngster. "We know we're going through a bit of a tricky patch at the moment, but we've got enough experience in the dressing room to know that these things happen.

    "It's a time to stick together, work a little bit harder and the results will soon change."

    Officers investigating the death of a man found in water in Birmingham have issued a fresh appeal to help identify him.

    The man was found in the river near Wyndhurst Road in Stechford at about 14:20 on Tuesday 17 December.

    Despite a post-mortem examination and investigations by both the police and the coroner’s office, the man’s identity is still not known, says West Midlands Police.

    An image of the clothing the man was wearing at the time has now been released.

    His death is not being treated as suspicious.

    Building the high-speed rail link HS2 could cost up to £106bn, a government-commissioned review has said.

    The unpublished report, seen by the Financial Times, external, says there is "considerable risk" that estimated costs could rise by another 20%.

    In 2015, HS2 - set to link London to Birmingham under phase one of plans - was set to cost £56bn. That was itself an increase on its original budget of £32bn.

    The review also recommends pausing the second phase of the project while experts look at whether conventional lines could help link Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds instead.

    British number one Dan Evans came back from two sets down for the first time to reach the Australian Open second round.

    The Birmingham player beat American Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 to advance.

    Evans, playing his first Grand Slam as a seed, looked edgy in the first two sets on a packed outside court, showing his frustration at times.

    Evans' victory sets up a second-round match against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

    There's ten miles of queuing traffic on the M42 southbound in Warwickshire following an earlier crash involving a lorry and two cars.

    All lanes have been reopened after the incident between J9 and J8.

    Travel time through the area is about an hour, said Highways England.

    There's queuing traffic ahead of the incident from J2 to J1.
