    Shropshire- born author Jack Fairweather's book The Volunteer has won the Costa Book of the Year award for 2019.

    The Volunteer profiles Polish resistance fighter Witold Pilecki who infiltrated the Nazi death camp Auschwitz to smuggle out information.

    "I stumbled across this historical figure and wanted to know more," said Mr Fairweather, a former war reporter, earlier this year.

    "When he arrived at the camp in 1940, it was a brutal place for political prisoners and he witnessed the steps of the Nazis arriving at the final solution."

    City of Wolverhampton Council has secured £390,000 of funding to boost their work in tackling rough sleeping in the city.

    It says the money will supplement its existing services for rough sleepers and will provide additional outreach provision, accommodation, support and activities to help keep people of the streets.

    Councillor Peter Bilson, the council deputy leader, said: “We are delighted the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has recognised the positive work we are doing in the city to tackle the issue of rough sleeping and the extra funding will help support this."

    He said the funding will make a "real difference to reducing the number of rough sleepers in the city".

    West Midlands Trains has revealed plans to build a new electric train depot, external at the former Bescot freight yard in Wednesbury.

    The development is part of the company's £1 billion investment programme and will provide more trains for passengers across its network.

    It will also create more than 100 jobs.

    No decisions have been made, and West Midlands Trains is in the very early stages of preparing a planning application, which will be subject to approval from Sandwell Council.

    The company is holding its first public meeting about the project on 5 February at the Savoy and Mayfair Rooms, Walsall Football Club, from 18:30 to 20:30.

    A youngster from Coventry will be performing at the O2 in London this weekend - in the final of the Teenstar competition.

    Rudy said: "I really want to win it because I have put so much time and effort into it.

    "I would be really proud of myself for winning."

  10. Visitors 'gutted' by Exotic Zoo closurepublished at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

    Earlier we told you Telford's Exotic Zoo has announced it will be closing its doors to the public at its site at Lakeside Plant Centre in Priorslee

    The owner, Scott Adams, explained it was because they haven't got the car parking space or toilet facilities to cope with the number of visitors they were getting.

    There has been a huge reaction to the announcement on its Facebook page, external.

    Louise Mooney said: "Gutted! I tell everyone how amazing it is! I've brought so many different people with us."

    Shawbury United football club is returning home after being given land for a new stadium.

    It said the land, owned by Gerard Verdino, is being gifted on a 99-year lease and fundraising is under way to pay for a club house and five pitches.

    Shawbury United have been playing their games in Ludlow because they don't have a pitch in Shawbury, which matches the requirements of the West Midlands Premier League. The club called the gift an "amazing opportunity to secure the future of junior football within Shawbury".

    The club has 240 players, playing in both junior and senior leagues.

    The M6 exit slip road southbound at junction 10 in Walsall has reopened.

    Earlier we reported it was closed following a police incident.

    Although there are no details on what that incident was, Highways England said it is now resolved.

    There is some ongoing congestion along the A454 Black Country Route from the Keyway junction following the incident.

    Dozens of children with cancer across three counties could stay connected to their classrooms thanks to lottery funding for new robots.

    The Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust has been given National Lottery funding, external over five years to pay for 18 AV1 machines in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.

    They've already funded one of the robots for five-year-old Oscar Saxelby-Lee, who has been getting treatment over the past few months for leukaemia.

    The machine went to his school in Worcester and he controlled it from his hospital bed using his iPad to see what was going on while he was being kept in isolation.

    The charity said the money could help benefit some 40 school-age children in the three counties who are diagnosed each year with cancer.

    A police officer was dragged along the ground for around 200ft (64m) by a car in Worcestershire last night, when he tried to question the driver.

    West Mercia Police said the officer was responding to reports of two men acting suspiciously on Three Oaks Road in Wythall at around 19:20 and was dragged as he leaned into the vehicle.

    The officer was able to jump clear when the car turned around to pick up another man.

    He didn't suffer life-threatening or changing injuries, but Ch Insp Edward Hancox said: “It is completely appalling for a police officer to be injured whilst carrying out their duty."
