  8. Solihull schools 'won't be ready' to re-open on 1 Junepublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    Solihull Council has revealed its schools won't be ready to re-open by 1 June.

    Under government plans for England, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 classes can return to school a week on Monday, but the Conservative-run authority says it may need another week to carry out risk assessments to maker sure sites are safe.

    Elsewhere in the West Midlands, Director of Public Health for Sandwell Lisa McNally said opening schools to more pupils before an effective test, track and trace system had been put in place was "putting people at risk and not doing everything we can to protect people".

    Wolves players at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground took part in individual fitness sessions like this last Friday.

    They took place in separated areas of the site. Captain Conor Coady (top picture) and midfielder Ruben Neves (bottom) were among those involved.

    These drawings show what two landmark buildings in Coventry might look like with hundreds of solar panels.

    The city council wants to install 330 on the roofs of Broadgate House and the Council House, along with 37 other council buildings.

    These two buildings would be the first to get the panels, with 85 on the Tudor-style Council House and 247 on Broadgate House.

    The city council said in addition to going greener, the panels would save the authority about £1.5m in the long term.

    A travelling show has asked for permission to set up a permanent base in Oswestry.

    It wants to build a house and storage for fairground equipment at the former household recycling centre on Glovers Meadow.

    There have been 15 letters of objections, but a report due to go before Shropshire councillors later this month recommends that permission is granted.

    Environmental activists and Birmingham councillors have criticised the local authority leadership’s intention to continue burning waste at the city's Tyseley incinerator until at least 2034.

    Birmingham City Council is to decide which firm will run waste disposal services – including the incinerator. The ten-year contract comes into effect when the current agreement with Veolia ends in 2024.

    A suggestion of extending the life of the incinerator has been slammed by campaigners who say it goes against the idea of the “climate emergency”, declared by the city council last year.

    The council says it is committed to making Birmingham carbon neutral by 2030.

  13. Wildlife Trust raising money to buy farmpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    Another £93,000 is needed to buy a Herefordshire farm and turn it into a wetland habitat.

    Herefordshire Wildlife Trust says it has already raised £107,000 through grants and public donations, but needs £200,000 in total to buy Oak Tree Farm, at the foot of Dinmore Hill.

    The trust said the 30-acre site, which slopes down to the River Lugg, has "fantastic potential" and it plans to divert a natural spring there to create a home for wetland birds, and plant the area with wildflower seeds.

  14. Speed cameras plan as cars return to roadspublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    There will be more speed cameras around Staffordshire next week.

    Staffordshire Police said it was taking the action because it was expecting more people on the roads with the easing of travel restrictions.

  15. TNS denied ninth title as season ends earlypublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    The News Saints have missed out on a ninth successive title and a spot in the Champions League next season, after the Welsh Premier League decided to end the season early.

    The Oswestry club was in second place when games were suspended because of coronavirus, so will go into the Europa League instead, which means they won't earn as much money from European competition next season.

    TNS has benefited from about £1m a season in Champions League payments.

    Wales will be represented in the Champions League by Connah's Quay next season after they were declared league winners.

  16. Testing station opens at safari parkpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    West Midlands Safari Park has opened its car park as a mobile testing centre for Covid-19.

    The drive-through set-up offers self-administered tests for essential workers on an appointment-only basis.

    Those tested will receive their results within a few days. The site will run from today until Friday.

  19. Suitcase body identified in murder probepublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    A woman whose body was discovered in suitcases in the Forest of Dean last Tuesday has been named as 28-year-old Phoenix Netts.

    It's not known exactly where she was killed, police say, after her remains were found close to a quarry, near Coleford, Gloucestershire.

    In a statement, Ms Netts's family said they were devastated.

    Gareeca Conita Gordon, 27, of Birmingham, is charged with murder.

    Mahesh Sorathiya, 38, of Wolverhampton, is accused of assisting an offender.

    Neither defendant appeared at Bristol Crown Court where a hearing of the case took place on Tuesday morning.
