    Children back at seven schools in Dudley will be helped to cross roads by lollipop men and women as the service slowly resumes today., external

    With more pupils back at school as the lockdown eases, the local council says it is slowly bringing back the patrols.

    The service may vary from normal to cope with staggered start and finish times and parents and children are being asked to continue to social distance.

    More than 60 of the town's schools reopened across last week , externaland the authority says it is working to reopen the rest in the coming weeks.

  2. Attempted murder arrest after stabbingpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 8 June 2020

    A man's been stabbed at a house in Coventry.

    The victim, in his 40s, suffered serious neck and back injuries in the attack last night on Collingwood Road, West Midlands Police said.

    He was taken to hospital and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    A 55-year-old man's been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.

    The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will go ahead as scheduled, the leader of the city council has said.

    But the project still faces challenges to get venues finished.

    Ian Ward told a council committee that discussions were however taking place with the organisers of the Women’s European Football Championships due to a possible clash with semi-finals during what will be a "crowded summer for sport".

    Councillor Ward said, "We’re still planning to deliver what will be a fantastic event in 2022 - it will be celebration for the whole country post-Covid and post-Brexit.

    "The Games are now even more important to the wider region than they were before…this is fantastic opportunity and we need to make the most of it," he said.

    The Labour leader also told councillors that plans for delivering the three main capital projects, the Aquatic Centre, the Stadium and the Athlete’s Village, were currently under review due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    All three are key to the event taking place and are already on very tight timescales.

  7. Road and rail lines reopen after bridge strikepublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 8 June 2020

    Holyhead Road in Coventry has reopened after a lorry carrying a digger struck a bridge.

    Railway lines between Leamington Spa and Nuneaton have also reopened.

    A woman who was among the hundreds who gathered in Coventry's Broadgate on Sunday, to protest about the death of Afro-American George Floyd, said she had bought her children "to show them what's going on in the world" and how it related to their own experiences of racism.

    Leticia said she lived in a village where parents had stopped their children from playing with hers "because they have plaits in their hair and because of their skin colour". She added her children had "had enough".

    "We've had to explain it the best way we can, for them to understand, and they still fully don't... but it's sad that they're under 10 and we're having to do this," she said.

    The historic Colmore area in Snow Hill's seen as a key commercial district by the city council.

    The work starting today will see pedestrian access improved across Great Charles St Queensway and changes to traffic flow and the the current one-way system on Livery Street.

    The whole project's been given a finish date of July 2021.

  12. 'One patient an hour' as dentistry returns after lockdownpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 8 June 2020

    Patients seeking dental care and treatment in the West Midlands are being warned not to expect a full service immediately from today.

    Practices were told last week that they could reopen from 8 June, if they put in place appropriate safety measures.

    But the British Dental Association has warned there will only be a "skeleton service" because of a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE).

    In Shropshire, Ludlow dentist Chetan Kapoor said the surgery had only see a handful of patients at first.

    While in Staffordshire, Zoe Wray's practice in Birches Head, near Stoke-on-Trent, is reopening but she said there was a huge backlog to get through first.

    "It's going to be just one patient an hour. It's going to be ring us when you get to the practice so that we can then let you in when we are ready. Just one patient in the practice at a time for that hour."

    A mural's been chalked by a woman on the side of her house in tribute to George Floyd.

    Mr Floyd, an African-American man, died in police custody and his death's sparked protests across the world.

    Margo Rose Benson, from Telford, told the BBC she chalked the mural over the weekend to show her support in a peaceful manner.

    "I am a white woman who has had to watch as a child the racial abuse that my family and friends have had to suffer," she added.

    Holyhead Road in Coventry remains closed in both directions after an HGV carrying a digger struck a bridge.

    Rail services between Nuneaton and Leamington Spa have also been suspended following the incident shortly after 09:30.

    The road is closed close to the Alvis retail park.

    A bus service is operating between stations, said West Midlands Railway.

    An online booking system has been introduced for people wanting to use household waste recycling centres across Birmingham.

    They opened at the beginning of May, leading to huge queues and waiting times. Police were called in to manage the traffic.

    The city council said it expected an "initial surge" of usage, as people sought to dispose of waste during the pandemic, but waiting times have remained in "excess of two hours".

    From 11 June only those with a booking, linked to the registration plate, external of their vehicle, will be permitted access to the sites, the council added.

    Additionally, each vehicle will be restricted to one booking per week.

    Opening hours at all tips are also to be extended.

    Many have used lockdown as an opportunity to develop their hobbies, but one nine-year-old has gone a step further and used his talents to raised money for his school.

    Ryan Nunn, from Nuneaton, has raised more than £1,700 so far by fashioning keyrings and making wooden games.

    Ryan's mum, Penny Haywood, said: "He has also made lots of wooden stars with positive notes on them and hung them around our village to keep people's spirits up."
