Organisers of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to announce they have abandoned plans for an athletes' village.

Instead, student accommodation at the universities of Birmingham and Warwick will be used to house athletes, along with the National Exhibition Centre.

The purpose-built village was set to cost £500m.

The decision to move away from a new single-site in the Perry Barr area has been blamed on the Covid-19 crisis.

On temporary road changes in the rural county, which take space from cars to give to pedestrians and cyclists, Mr Johnson said: "When I was Mayor of London I used to cycle 30 miles a day easily. I think cycling is a fantastic thing to do.

"Often cycling in rural areas with quite fast A and B roads can be scarier... so we need to think... how we get motorists to understand that there will be cyclists on the road and that they're not all lycra louts."
