    A member of staff has tested positive for cornavirus at the JCB Academy in Rocester, five days after 100 students were asked to self isolate.

    A single case closed the school on Friday, but it reopened at the start of this week.

    The academy says three additional members of staff have now been asked to self-isolate, but no more pupils.

  2. Birmingham Christmas market cancelledpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 9 September 2020

    Birmingham's Christmas market has become the latest big event to be cancelled because of the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

    Kurt Stroscher, Frankfurt City Council’s Director of Festivals and Events said staff had looked at a range of options to allow it to go ahead, but couldn't find a way of meeting the likely restrictions.

    Mr Stroscher said: "Christmas markets like this are a place for socialising and ‘cosy closeness’” and he said he couldn't see how that was possible with rules on social distancing.

    "Under no circumstances did we want the Christmas market to become a place that promotes the pandemic,” he added.

  3. Homeless man attacked with 'stun gun'published at 15:39 British Summer Time 9 September 2020

    A homeless man was attacked with what's been described as an "electrical stun device" in Rubery.

    He was taken to hospital with minor injuries after being attacked at around 09:00 near the Co-op on New Road.

    There will be overnight road closures starting next week on a stretch of the A49 near Marshbrook in Shropshire.

    Shropshire Council said it would allow workmen to resurface the road, replace road markings and improve the drainage.

    People living in the area area being told they'll have to use a escort to get in and out.

    Commuters who use a car park at Waters Orton in Warwickshire might have to pay to use it in the future.

    North Warwickshire Borough Councillors have voted to spend £85,000 to increase the number of spaces from 44 to 55, with additional disabled bays and electric charging points.

    The council's director of streetscape, Richard Dobbs, said the car park was "often unavailable" for local residents to use for short stays, because commuters leave their cars there.

    And he suggested the long-stay users might be asked to contribute to the ongoing costs through pay and display machines.

    A Smethwick food company is shutting for two weeks after 16 workers tested positive for Covid-19.

    Scheff Foods, based at Halfords Park, said it had spoken to Sandwell Council and Public Health officials and would be carrying out a thorough clean.

    John Trotman here is thought to be the oldest active aeroclub member in the UK and he's been celebrating his 99th birthday in Shropshire today.

    He's been taken up in a plane from Sleap airfield by chief flying instructor Keith Walker, who took him to RAF Cosford and back.

    John is a former RAF pilot who served in World War Two, winning the Distinguished Flying Cross twice.

    He lives near Wem now and survived three crashes during his career as a pilot.

  14. Signalling equipment stolen from heritage railwaypublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 9 September 2020

    The Churnet Valley Railway in the Staffordshire Moorlands has said tens of thousands of pounds worth of signalling equipment has been stolen.

    It said thieves broke into storage containers in Froghall at the weekend, cutting three security locks to get inside.

    The railway said mechanical signalling equipment was becoming harder to get hold of these days and it was a "bitter blow to the line’s volunteers".

    It said it would now have to wait for more to become available when the parts are taken out of use on modern-day tracks and replaced with new ones.

    The wait could be up to 10 years for some parts.

    It said following the loss of income because of coronavirus this year, "this is one hit the railway just could not afford".

    A coronavirus outbreak linked to a working men's club in Newcastle-under-Lyme is now said to be under control.

    Staffordshire County Council had asked anyone who had visited a dozen venues between 16 and 17 August to get tested after cases centered on a bingo night at Silverdale Working Men’s Club.

    About 500 tests a day had been carried out over the course of five or six days and 18 confirmed cases were identified

    Dr Richard Harling, the county council’s director of health and care, said: “We do believe that incident is now under control and has now been closed.”

    He became the first Worcestershire player to captain England since Tom Graveney in 1968, when he stood in for the injured Eoin Morgan.
