  1. Two arrested after shot fired at car in 'gang clash'published at 11:05 British Summer Time 14 September 2020

    Two men have been arrested after a gun was fired at a car in what police believe to be a suspected "gang clash".

    Armed officers were called to Watcombe Road, Coventry at 16:20 after reports of a man on an e-scooter was being pursued by a car.

    Witnesses described seeing the Audi driver try to ram the scooter before he’s believed to have opened fire at the vehicle, said West Midlands Police.

    The vehicle was later traced to a petrol station on the A45 where two men were detained.

    Ch Insp Paul Minor from Coventry Police said: "The two men we’ve arrested have links to gang activity in the city and we suspect this was a clash between rival groups."

    Two people remain in a critical condition in hospital following an attack in which a man was killed and seven others injured in incidents across Birmingham, police say.

    The inquest of Jacob Billington who was stabbed to death in Hurst Street, Birmingham, on 6 September, opened today.

    The library intern, 23, originally from Crosby in Merseyside was one of eight people attacked during the early hours of the morning.

    Zephaniah McLeod, 27, of Nately Grove, Selly Oak has appeared in court charged with murder and seven counts of attempted murder, with a trial date set for February 2021.

  4. Birmingham 'faces tougher lockdown if rules ignored'published at 10:01 British Summer Time 14 September 2020

    The West Midlands mayor has warned people must comply with new local lockdown restrictions or face even tougher measures.

    Households in Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell must not mix from Tuesday following a spike in coronavirus cases.

    "We will use these restrictions, look at how the numbers move, and if they are not sufficient, we might have to go further," Andy Street said on Sunday.

    "Everybody now has to comply with these to give us the best chance."

  5. Million-brick prayer monument given approvalpublished at 09:33 British Summer Time 14 September 2020

    A 169ft (51m) national prayer monument to be built with a million bricks has been given final planning permission.

    The Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer will be built between the M6 and M42 motorways near Coleshill, Warwickshire, with construction due to start in 2021.

    The monument will be more than double the size of the Angel of the North.

    Richard Gamble, a former chaplain to Leicester City Football Club, said it was "incredible" the final planning hurdles had been cleared.

    A man has been charged with arson following a fire at a block of flats in Coventry.

    The fire was contained to a 14th-floor flat in Wellington Street in Hillfields on Friday.

    Abdu Aden, of Wellington Street, Coventry, has been charged with two counts of arson with intent/recklessness to endanger life.

    He is also charged with possession of a bladed article and is due to appear before Coventry Magistrates' Court.
