A coronavirus vaccine is "highley unlikely" to be available before Christmas, Birmingham's director of public health says.
Dr Justin Varney was speaking at a city council cabinet meeting and said that while planning had begun around a potential future roll-out of a vaccine, next year was more realistic.
Earlier this month it was reported that doctors in the West Midlands had been told to plan for a mass coronavirus vaccination scheme from as early as November.
But Dr Varney explained: "It’s a significant challenge to vaccinate the population so what the NHS was asked to do was look at how they would actually deliver a vaccine at scale".

Birmingham City Council said it was “committed to achieving net zero carbon as soon as possible and in advance of the national target of 2050 and the regional target of 2041 set by the West Midlands Combined Authority”.

Solihull Council could spend an extra £490,000 a year to support more staff working from home in the future.
It employs more than 2,000 staff and the majority have been working from home since March.
The council's cabinet will be asked to agree the annual package and the money will be used to make sure all staff are provided with a laptop, mouse, keyboard and monitor to work at home if they want to.
They will also be offered chairs and desks if they need them.
Offices will be rearranged to allow some people to continue working there, if they prefer.
It's argued that the extra spending will save it money on printing, stationery and other expenses.

Police have released an image of a man they want to trace after an assault in Birmingham city centre left another critically injured.
The West Midlands force said the attack happened on Upper Dean Street on 5 October.
Officers are still trying to identify the injured man who suffered a serious head injury when he was punched. He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Det Insp Richard Marsh said: “The motive of the attack remains unclear, but this appears to be an unprovoked attack on a lone victim."
Police have described the injured man as black and aged between 40 and 50.
Three men and two women, arrested on suspicion of assault, have been released on bail with conditions, the force added.
Authorities in Cheshire asked the government for tighter restrictions two weeks ago.
