    Matt Baker, the former presenter of The One Show, is to return to the BBC programme to take part in its annual charity Rickshaw Challenge, external.

    Baker will be joined for the challenge by six young people, including Lewis, 18, from Coventry, who had his leg amputated after he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2017.

    Lewis said: "I have always been a keen footballer, so having my leg amputated was devastating for me."

    He added that he hoped to "prove to myself just what I can achieve".

    Happy Mondays, Editors and Echo & the Bunnymen are all on the line-up for a new festival launching in Wolverhampton next summer.

    West Park will host the Creation Day Festival, external next May.

    It will be curated by the founder of Creation Records, Alan McGee.

    Due to coronavirus, a limited number of tickets will be on offer initially - but it's hoped as restrictions are lifted, capacity can be increased.

    About 450 jobs are being lost after an "organisational restructuring" of the NEC Group in the West Midlands.

    The Birmingham-based firm runs five venues including the National Exhibition Centre, Resorts World Arena and International Convention Centre.

    The redundancies equate to 55% of the permanent workforce.

    The group said it proposed to retain a some staff until it is again able to host large-scale events.

    The Crewe Alexandra manager, David Artell, has insisted his team "haven't broken one rule" following the decision to play Wigan at the weekend and two postponements of the Oxford game.

    The Wigan manager, John Sheridan, questioned why their game went ahead and featured two players who had previously tested positive for coronavirus.

    Artell said this morning: "To my knowledge we haven't broken one rule, with the EFL, with Public Health England, with the government, with the police."

    He said the reason the Oxford United games were postponed was because "Oxford have kicked up a stink".

    Oxford said it wouldn't be commenting.

    The daily schedule for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, external in 2022 has been launched with 14 different sports on the opening day.

    Competitors in the 3x3 basketball, artistic gymnastics, hockey and squash will be among the first in action.

    It's hoped more than a million spectators will attend the games which also feature two full weekends of sport in the 11 days.

    Crewe's decision to play Ryan Wintle and Omar Beckles in Saturday's 3-0 win over Wigan has been questioned by the Wigan manager.

    Both players had previously tested positive for coronavirus and had been self-isolating.

    The match against Oxford United on 3 October had to be postponed when the pair tested positive.

    John Sheridan's said: "Obviously the game with Oxford previous to us was called off and then the two lads, it was a big shock when we saw them on the team sheet."

    After the Wigan game, Crewe's rearranged fixture against Oxford also had to be postponed, when two more Crewe players tested positive.

    Sheridan said that was an "even bigger shock" and added: "There's other people looking into the situation."

  10. Adam Peaty in call for leisure centres to stay openpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 16 October 2020

    World record-breaking, Olympic breaststroke champion Adam Peaty has called for sports facilities to remain open across the country.

    Gyms in parts of England on the "very high" tier have shut their doors.

    The 25-year-old from Uttoxeter, said "at whatever cost we've got to keep the leisure centres open, but keep it safe."

    "I don't want to be another voice pretending to be an expert," he told BBC Breakfast.

    "I just know how much sport can help people."

    Saturday 3 October was the wettest day for UK-wide rainfall since records began in 1891, Met Office researchers have said.

    The downpour followed in the wake of Storm Alex and saw an average of 31.7mm (1.24ins) of rain across the entire UK.

    More than 20 counties across the country have already received at least 100% of the rain they would expect on average for October, including Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

    Storms across the UK saw February become the wettest on record, resulting in widespread flooding.

    Public toilets at Bowring Park in Wellington have been twinned with a toilet in Honduras.

    Wellington Rotary Club said the idea is to help fund projects in communities over there.

    Stoke City manager Michael O'Neil isn't sure whether goalkeeper Jack Butland will still be at the club when the transfer window closes later.

    But he said he's had "open and honest discussions" with the player and Butland has promised to fight for a starting place at Stoke if he doesn't leave.

    A 92-year-old woman has been attacked in her home in Coventry by three burglars who tried to prise off an engagement ring from her finger.
