    Wellington Town Council has announced its annual Remembrance Day parade and Christmas lights switch-on would be cancelled, due to coronavirus restrictions.

    The local authority said it would be pre-recording a service for Remembrance Sunday which would then be available for people to watch online.

    Santa Claus too will be coming to town via Facebook, in place of the annual Christmas lights switch on event - although the council said the town would still be decorated and lit up for the festive season.

  3. Boy, nine, injured in hit-and-run crashpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    A nine-year-old boy was taken to hospital after he was hit by a motorcycle outside a country park.

    Warwickshire Police said the boy was hit on the main driveway at Coombe Abbey, in Binley, just before 14:00 on Sunday.

    He was taken to hospital by ambualance but has since been discharged, the force said, adding that he was "thankfully not seriously injured".

    Police are appealing for witnesses and are "actively trying to locate" the motorcyclist, who is believed to have left the scene with another biker.

  4. Coronavirus: Three-tier lockdown system to be introducedpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    We're expecting news this afternoon of a new three-tier system to guide coronavirus restrictions across England.

    Each area will be placed in a tier, depending on the how badly they've been affected, with those in tier three due to face the most stringent measures.

    According to the latest NHS figures, Nottingham is the worst-affected area, with 830 new cases per 100,000 people in the week up to 8 October. A week earlier it stood at 314.5.

    The north Of England also has a number of locations with high rates, including Liverpool, Newcastle, Burnley and Manchester - all in excess of 400 per 100,000 people.

    Birmingham's rate is 167.9 per 100,000 people, followed by Walsall at 137.3.

    NHS England’s medical director Prof Steve Powis says more patients are currently in hospital with Covid-19 than when the national lockdown was announced in March.

    A motorcyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after a three-vehicle collision near Leek, Staffordshire, on Sunday.

    Emergency services were called to the A53 in Upper Hulme shortly before 15:00 after the crash, which police say involved a red Peugeot 206, a blue Lotus Elise and a yellow Aprilia motorcycle.

    Staffordshire Police said a 35-year-old woman who was driving the Peugeot was also taken to hospital by ambulance, alongside a two-year-old child for treatment while the driver of the Lotus, a 33-year-old man, was also treated for minor injuries.

    The force appealed for information, particularly dashcam footage, from witnesses.

  6. Police seek two after mass brawl leaves man badly hurtpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    Police have issued pictures of two men they're trying to trace after a mass brawl involving 19 people in Penrith.

    Officers say the disorder left a man from Dudley seriously injured in hospital and another, local, man with minor injuries.

    The fight is said to have started inside the Pinny and spread into the street just before 22:30 on 19 September, and police are now trying to identify the two men caught on CCTV.

    Ten others have been interviewed, with three being arrested and released under investigation, on suspicion of violent disorder.

    Warwickshire Police said it responded to 36 reports of coronavirus restrictions breaches over the weekend, including a number of house parties.

    The force said fines had been issued to homeowners in Bedworth, Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton and Rugby after revellers were found gathered in homes.

    Those found in breach of restrictions are facing fines of up to £200.

    Officers are also investigating reports of shop workers and customers not wearing face coverings and a group of more than 20 people sitting together at a restaurant in Rugby.

  11. Hospital trust fined for A&E delayspublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has been fined £4,000 by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) over failures to initially assess A&E patients within 15 minutes.

    “We have issued a penalty notice due to the severity of the situation and to ensure the necessary, urgent improvements are made," Chief Inspector of Hospitals Ted Baker said.

    “It is essential that patients are seen in a timely way when they arrive at an emergency department; failure to do so could result in deteriorating health, harm, or even death."

    Failures in triaging were identified at both the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, between 18 April 2019 and 29 September 2020.

    The trust said it had made a number of changes, including recruiting more nurses, and had managed to reduce its average triage time to nine minutes over the past few weeks.

  12. Coventry tops list of lost retail spacepublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    Retail space has been hit hard in Coventry according to a new study which has found about 300,000 square metres of retail space was lost in England and Wales in the past year.

    Boodle Hatfield, a private wealth and property law firm which conducted the research, told the PA news agency the decline had been accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic.

    Manchester was found to have lost the largest amount of retail space, followed by Kingston upon Hull, Coventry Sheffield and Peterborough.

    "The retail landscape is continuing to contract with more and more space being taken out of use," Simon Williams, from the firm, said. "The more severe the lockdown rules the faster this decline."

    A French bulldog named Lyla was stolen from her home in Wolverhampton on Sunday, police said, as they appeal for information to find her.

    West Midlands Police said officers were investigating the break-in on Rowlands Avenue, Eastfields, in which an electric bike and electric scooter were also stolen.

    "We understand a light-coloured Volkswagen, possibly a Golf or Polo, & white VW Caddy van were seen in the area and we'd like to get in touch with the drivers," the force said.

    Anyone with information is asked to get in touch.

    The southbound carriageway on the A38 St Chad's tunnel has been blocked by police due to a broken-down vehicle, but West Midlands Roads has also reported issues with traffic lights at the junction of Moor Street and Jennens Road.

    The lights aren't staying green for long enough, causing a build up of traffic in the city centre.

    The issues are having a knock-on effect on buses, with some terminating earlier than usual.

  15. Drivers facing fines for bus lane usepublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    New enforcement measures come in for drivers in Worcester today after a survey found more than 1,100 motorists ignored restrictions on bus lanes in a busy part of the city in just two weeks.

    Restrictions apply 15:30 - 18:30 on the lane into Lowesmoor from Sansome Street and around the clock on the bus gate access from Lowesmoor to St Nicholas Street which drivers facing fines of up to £60 for breaking the rules.

    Jon Fraser, who is in charge of highways for Worcestershire County Council, said the area was identified as a highly polluting and hopes the new restrictions should hopefully improve the air quality.

    "First Bus has also told us they can't rely on their journey times and that's another reason we need to get the cars out of that route to improve the bus journeys," he said.

    A 27-year-old man who died in a crash in Berkshire earlier this month has been remembered as "bright, happy, thoughtful and caring" by his family and friends.

    Oliver Williams, from Stratford-upon-Avon, was killed in a crash on the A34 in East Ilsley on 2 October, Thames Valley Police said.

    The force issued a statement on behalf of his family which said the software engineer had led "such an exciting life, achieving so much".

    He was a young patron of the Royal Shakespeare Company, his family said, and a much-loved member and "mascot" in his work at a video games company in the town.

  17. Football club signs lease for stadium in fullpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 12 October 2020

    AFC Telford United has signed a lease deal with the local council that covers the entirety of the New Buck’s Head ground - parts of which have been leased to others until now.

    The ground is owned by Telford and Wrekin Council which had previously leased the West Stand with its bar, restaurant and leisure facilities to Telford College, while the remainder of the ground was leased to the football club.

    Signing the new deal for the whole of the stadium "gives the club much greater certainty into the future," said Andy Pryce, chairman of AFC Telford United.

    “We are delighted that this longstanding issue is now resolved," he said. "It will also put us on much more solid footing as we continue to grapple with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic."
