    Five people were hurt when a car they were travelling in hit a tree.

    The two women and three men were treated by paramedics at the scene on Park Lane in Handsworth, Birmingham, during Monday evening.

    They were all taken to hospital suffering various injuries, said the ambulance service.

    Coventry’s e-scooter trials are close to returning and this time will be set around the University of Warwick.

    A 12-month trial launched in the city centre in September but was paused after five days due to complaints about people riding them on pavements and outside of the trial zone.

    Operator Voi said the e-scooters – which can travel up to 15.5mph (24.9km/h) – were “safe, convenient and environmentally friendly” but problems arose due to “a few anti-social people”.

    Work has since taken place with Coventry City Council to get the trials back on track, the company said.

    The West Midlands mayor says no decision has yet been taken by the government on which tier or tiers the region will be put into when England's second national lockdown ends next week.

    The Prime Minister has set out tougher lockdown tiers for England, but regions will not find out their categories until Thursday.

    Andy Street said taking the decision as late as possible was "crucial" as the local rate of infection was beginning to fall.

    Much of the West Midlands was under tier two restrictions going into the lockdown including Birmingham, Dudley, Staffordshire and Coventry. During that second lockdown, period, however, Dudley at one point had England's fourth highest infection rate.

    The government has said a decision on a new secondary school for Wolverhampton is likely to be made before the end of the year.

    The Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South West, Stuart Anderson, told the House of Commons on Monday local population growth had left schools overcrowded.

    In response, the Education Minister, Vicky Ford, told the Commons she hoped a decision would be made soon.

    The prime minister has announced a new tier system, which will be introduced at the end of the current England lockdown.

    • Tier one will now mean that people should continue to work from home where possible
    • Tier two will now mean only pubs serving meals can open
    • Tier three will now mean hospitality will close except for delivery and takeaway and indoor entertainment venues must also close

    Boris Johnson will announce which areas will fall into which tier later this week, probably on Thursday, he says.

    Much of the West Midlands was under tier two restrictions going into the national lockdown, including Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley and Staffordshire.

  12. Ancient bridge to close for urgent repairspublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2020

    One of the oldest bridges in Shropshire is to close for a week to enable urgent repairs to be undertaken.

    The current structure is Grade II* listed and probably dates back to the 16th Century, Historic England says, external.

    It was closed earlier this year after being struck by several vehicles.

    Clun Bridge, which carries the A488 over the River Clun, will be closed from Monday 7 December to Friday 11 December, Shropshire Council has announced. , external

    A full road closure is necessary for the works, it added, with traffic being diverted.

    “Hopefully the bridge CCTV cameras, which are currently off-site being repaired, will be back in place by the time the bridge reopens to traffic, so that we can again capture registration numbers should the bridge be hit again,” said local councillor Nigel Hartin.

    A man has been arrested after a woman was seriously injured by a lit firework that was thrown at her.

    She was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries to her face and legs after the assault in Meadow Street, Nuneaton, on 29 October.

    The woman, in her 30s, has since been discharged.

    A 51-year-old man from the town was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and released on police bail while inquiries continue, said Warwickshire Police.

    A world-renowned concert organist is to be awarded the Queen's Medal for Music, for his contribution to the musical life of Great Britain.

    Thomas Trotter has been the city organist in Birmingham since 1983, as well as organist at St Margaret's chapel in Westminster Abbey in London.

    Mr Trotter said he was "deeply honoured".

    "To have my work recognised in this way is totally unexpected and highly gratifying, and it is a privilege to join the list of distinguished recipients of this award," he added.

    A family-run company in Coventry that supplies copper tubes says it has switched production to cater for "unprecedented demand" from the NHS and healthcare providers.

    Lawton Tubes said it had supplied the equivalent of more than 120 miles of medical gas copper pipes in just six months - including to the Nightingale Hospital in Birmingham.

    Ten miles of tubes and thousands of fittings were supplied to the project.
