He told BBC Breakfast: "We haven't got a go-live date yet. I would like it to be as soon as possible but [Birmingham] airport's been very thorough in its preparations."

Asked if there are hotels ready and waiting, he said: "There are plenty of hotels on the Birmingham Airport campus that could be put to this use very swiftly."

He went on to transfer £9,350 into an account set up by a scammer, police said, after being told his account was in danger.

The suspect has since been released under investigation, police said.

  9. Covid 19: South African variant in Walsall 'isolated case'published at 09:36 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

The identification of the South African variant of coronavirus found in Walsall was "one isolated case", according to the mayor of the West Midlands.

    West Midlands mayor Andy Street

The individual acted "incredibly responsibly", Andy Street said, "so let's hope that the chain has been broken".

About 10,000 people living in the immediate area are to be offered coronavirus tests either at a mobile testing area or by door-to-door service, he told BBC Breakfast.

“We can’t be certain where they got it [the variant] from.

"We do know that the person was incredibly responsible, followed all of the advice impeccably actually, so we hope that it has not been passed on."

  10. What does new variant mean in fight against Covid?published at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

    David Gregory-Kumar
    Science correspondent, BBC Midlands Today

All viruses mutate and there are thousands of slightly different versions of the coronavirus out there.

What worries scientists is when a variant starts to spread and becomes dominant, because that usually means it's more infectious. On top of this, vaccines can also be less effective against them.

That's the case with the South African variant. Just as we are making progress with vaccination, along comes a new version of the virus that could potentially knock those gains back a bit.

We need to understand what's happened with the South African variant in Walsall.

That's why everyone in WS2 who is over 16 needs to get tested. That will allow us to find anyone with the new variant and get them to isolate.

If we can break the chain of infection and stop this outbreak in its tracks we pull ahead again in the ongoing race between infection and injection.

  11. Covid 19: Testing programme to find South African variantpublished at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

A coronavirus testing programme is getting under way in Walsall after a case of the South African variant was found.

People living in parts of the WS2 postcode area are being told to stay at home and get tested after a case with no link to overseas travel was confirmed there.

On-the-spot doorstep tests, home testing kits and mobile testing units will be deployed to try to reach about 10,000 people in the area.

Stephen Gunther, director of public health in Walsall, said there was currently no evidence the variant caused more severe illness or that vaccines would not protect against it, but research showed it was transmitted more easily.

West Midlands Police said two of its officers had parked in Maytree Close, Chemsley Wood, at 23:15 GMT on Sunday, while waiting for recovery as they had a flat tyre.

As the officers were doing some paperwork, a brick was thrown through a rear window, hitting one of the officers on the head.

She was not seriously injured, the force said, but required medical treatment from paramedics and has been left "shaken and upset".

The suspect was riding a bike and was dressed in black clothing, police said, and the force is appealing for witnesses.

Ch Supt Ian Green, from the force, branded the attack: "Absolutely mindless violence that could have been so much worse.

"No-one comes to work and deserves this."
