    Gareth Southgate said Ollie Watkins' goal on his England debut last night was a "fairytale" for the Aston Villa striker.

    He scored against San Marino with his first shot after coming on for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 83rd minute.

    Afterwards, Southgate described Watkins as "a really humble boy" and added: "The first thing you saw was the reaction from the rest of the team, that shows you how together they are - they know what it means for him. He's settled in really quickly with the group."

    John McGinn believed he was offside as he netted a fine overhead kick to salvage a draw for Scotland against Austria at Hampden Park.

    The Aston Villa midfielder now has eight goals in 16 caps, and is the top scorer under Steve Clarke.

    McGinn hauled Scotland level for the second time, in the 85th minute, cleverly steering Ryan Christie's header into the far bottom corner.

    The midfielder said he was "relieved I've not broken my neck attempting it".

    A scheme to bring all rough sleepers indoors at the start of the pandemic has seen a large disparity in the outcomes of those supported across England, new data has revealed.

    Martin, from Shrewsbury, was one of those helped by Everyone In.

    He slept rough in a concrete alcove under a bridge next to the River Severn for a year before the pandemic.

    He said he had asked his local council for support when he first became homeless, but was told he did not qualify as he was not considered a priority need.

    But when the Everyone In scheme began, he was given a hotel room - and has since been helped into privately rented accommodation."

  4. Company says test 'proves quarry not to blame for smells'published at 10:01 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    The company which runs a landfill site in Newcastle-under-Lyme has carried out tests which it believes prove it isn't responsible for smells in the area.

    Instead, Red Industries said hydrogen sulphide contamination from ground water was responsible and not Walleys quarry, in Silverdale.

    The company has now asked the Environment Agency and Newcastle Borough Council to carry out their own tests.

    The council said it would be asking Red Industries for all the details and data so it could be independently analysed.

  5. Four West Midlands MPs oppose extension of Covid powerspublished at 09:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    On Thursday night there were four West Midlands MPs among 76 who opposed the extension of emergency coronavirus powers for the government.

    Tories Harriett Baldwin (West Worcestershire) and Craig Tracey (North Warwickshire); and Labour's John Spellar (Warley), and Zarah Sultana (Coventry South) all voted the powers are no longer needed, but 484 members voted to extend them for another six months.

    Other MPs to oppose the extension included former Conservative Cabinet ministers David Davis, Esther McVey and John Redwood, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who now sits as an independent, ex-shadow chancellor John McDonnell and one-time Labour leadership contender Rebecca Long-Bailey.

    The Liberal Democrats also opposed the extension, along with the only Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

    People over the age of 50 will be able to receive a Covid vaccine without an appointment at three centres in the Black Country for the next week.

    Anyone eligible for a jab can turn up at The Saddlers Centre in Walsall, Tipton Sports Academy and VW Active Aldersley, in Wolverhampton.

    Some people who are due to have a first vaccination have not booked and organisers hope the move will ensure all available vaccine is used.

    Sally Roberts, chief nurse for Black Country and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Groups, said the move came after feedback from the public.

    "People, when they are waiting for appointments, they would rather be seen quickly, come and get their vaccine and get about their daily work and this opportunity is here now for a week," she said.

    A Herefordshire road is set to finally reopen this afternoon, after being shut for more than a year.

    The B4224 between Fownhope and Holme Lacy collapsed in two places in February 2020 and has been closed to traffic ever since.

    The repairs were originally supposed to take six months, but the work was pushed back after a number of setbacks.

    The council has previously apologised for the closure and has asked for an independent review into the work by contractor Balfour Beatty.

  15. Covid-19: More than four million in Midlands vaccinatedpublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2021

    More than four million people in the Midlands have now received a Covid-19 vaccine, according to the latest NHS figures.

    In total, 4,638,951 people in the wider region had received their first dose by 21 March.

    Among the 50s age group - the current priority for vaccinations - 1,092,448 have received a first dose.

    Some 89% of those aged over 50 are now thought to have had at least one dose of a vaccine.

    The chief executive of the Royal Stoke and County hospitals has said there is a sense of relieft as coronavirus patient numbers fall.

    Tracy Bullock said they're currently treating about 50 patients across both hospitals, with seven in critical care.

    Ms Bullock said staff have "faced problems that have required all of us to think very differently" while they were "dealing with a highly infectious disease that none of us had ever encountered".

    And she said the trust had been forced to redesign the hospitals, to reduce the risk of infection.

    A suggestion by the prime minister that pub goers could be asked to provide a vaccine certificate has been criticised by one landlady as "absolutely ridiculous".

    A review is looking into whether people should have to prove they have been vaccinated, as lockdown measures ease.

    Boris Johnson had floated the idea of pub-goers having to prove their vaccination status when venues reopen but added no decisions had been made.

    Lisa Finlay runs the Winning Post pub in Tamworth, Staffordshire: "This is not happening at cafes, hairdressers, beauty salons and essential retail, why is it always pubs that are singled out?"

  20. Covid: Concern over Shard End infection ratepublished at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2021

    While infection rates across Birmingham are continuing to fall, the rapidly increasing rate in the Shard End area is being described as a "warning bell" by the city's head of public health.

    Across Birmingham the seven day case rate stands at 70.2 new cases per 100,000 people, but in Shard End it stands at 369.9, up from 238.4 the previous week.

    Dr Justin Varney said "Some of this is about families, but some is also about social interaction outside of the house and between households."

    He asked people to continue to follow the guidelines while warning that enforcement may need to be ramped up.
