A former wartime building which was built with 13 inch (33cm) thick walls, capable of surviving a Luftwaffe raid, is going to be turned in to a modern, five-bedroom home.

The old power station near Balsall Common once served nearby RAF Honiley, but it closed in the late 1950s and large areas of the runway have since been dismantled.

    It has since become overgrown.

  12. Bee campaigners urge council to stop using pesticidespublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Campaigners want Birmingham City Council to stop using pesticides in parks and on grass verges because of a threat to wildlife, particularly bees.

Bee Friendly Brum, a group of local residents formed just recently, have set up a petition calling on the council to stop using glyphosate-based pesticides.

High concentrations can be fatal to bees, and can also severely affect their navigation, sleep and larval development.

"The number one thing we’re asking the council to do is stop using weedkillers, and pesticides in the city," says Laura Hackett, one of the group's founders.

"So that’s all the public spaces, in the parks, on the grass verges, on the pavements, on the areas where they spray, we want them to stop spraying and we would like that to be part of a wider initiative of restoring habitats and promoting biodiversity and increasing habitats in the city."

She said as Birmingham was one of Britain’s greenest cities, the authority was in a "really strong position to lead the way in actively restoring biodiversity".

The petition has so far had over 500 signatures, and the group is encouraging Birmingham residents to get in touch with their local councillors to join efforts in persuading the council.
