  11. Big rise in Covid-19 cases in Solihullpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 22 July 2021

A rise in Covid-19 cases in Solihull may be linked to the Euros, it is feared.

Solihull currently has the highest rate of Covid-19 infections in the West Midlands.

There were 895 new cases per 100,000 people in the seven days up to 18 July - up from 561 the week before.

It means there were more than 1,900 cases in the week, with only Birmingham and Coventry having more in the region.

Last week, Karen Grinsell, deputy leader of solihull Council, suggested people had been celebrating getting to the final "more than perhaps they should have”.

Figures released on Wednesday show the rates in Solihull were currently highest in 16 to 24-year-old males, followed by 24 to 35-year-old males.

The connection with the Euros has already been made on a national level and earlier this month was thought to be part of the reason for a spike in cases in Tamworth.

Ruth Tennant, the local director of public health, said the pattern of more young men developing Covid-19 was part of a national trend.

She called on over 18s in the area to get their vaccinations as soon as possible.

  12. Test and Trace affecting police staffing says Chief Constablepublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 22 July 2021

The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police has called for improvements to the NHS Test and Trace app amid a challenging impact on staff numbers.

Sir Dave Thompson said "high self-isolation" within the force was making it "increasingly challenging... to ensure that resilience is not compromised".

“Against this backdrop, it is critical that we explore all opportunities with government to introduce a test and release scheme swiftly for policing which makes it easier for us to free up resources and meet demand at what is already an exceptionally busy time of the year," he said.

More than 600,000 people using the NHS Covid-19 app in England and Wales were sent self-isolation alerts in the week between 8 and 15 July and there have been complaints from businesses that the alerts are causing serious staff shortages and affecting services.

Wolverhampton City Council has confirmed it will bid for the city to become the UK's next City of Culture in 2025.

"Wolverhampton is a fantastic, culturally rich, diverse and dynamic city that's going places," council leader Ian Brookfield said.

"We have worked hard to create momentum on this to build on the very strong foundations we know we have."

The city's plans include becoming an "events city", with high-profile events such as The British Art Show laying the foundations for the bid.

    Quote Message

We believe that we have a strong case to make both in terms of the amazing cultural assets we already have in the city, our bold plans for becoming an 'events city' in the future and the potential that winning this honour would have to fast-track our city's growth, international profile and reputation
