    Firefighters from across Herefordshire have been battling a fire in a field near Lyonshall.

    Kington Fire Station said about three hectares (7.4 acres) of stumble, as well as bales, timber and even tree stumps were on fire.

    It posted on Facebook, externalit was "hard to believe" the fire was raging at the same time as colleagues in Bromyard were battling "torrential rain and floods".

    Sudden heavy rain on Monday night saw flood water streaming through Bromyard.

    The rushing water was captured on film on Cruxwell Street and the High Street.

    Cars can be seen driving through the high waters as thunder rumbles in the background.

    The town's leisure centre was also forced to close, only a matter of days after it opened, due to flooding.

    Further thunderstorms are forecast across the region later today.

    Concerns about claimed increases in water pollution in the River Wye are being highlighted through a month-long journey along the waterway.

    Campaigners from Herefordshire started earlier this month at the river's source in Wales and aim to finish at the Severn Estuary.

    Rachel Bomford from the Walking with the Wye group said members have recorded increases in pollutants, plastics and invasive plants in the waterway.

    "Our aim is to raise awareness of the environmental and ecological damage which is happening to the River Wye," she said.

    A show featuring Craig David will headline the main stage as part of this year's Godiva Festival in Coventry.

    The three-day event will be held in the city's War Memorial Park between 3 and 5 September, but with a reduced capacity to allow social distancing.

    Craig David presents TS5 - which features the artist DJing and singing, will finish the Saturday night line-up.

    Other artists are yet to be announced.

    More than 90% of the patients being treated for coronavirus at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital have not been vaccinated, the hospital's chief medical officer has said.

    Dr Brian McKaig said there were currently just over 40 Covid patients at the hospital, but the number was increasing.

    "Even though numbers in the community are falling, what we usually see is that it takes at least two weeks before we see that effect on hospital admissions," he said.

    He told the BBC that doctors were also treating "a much younger cohort" and emphasised the importance of getting vaccinated, which he said was "critical".

    Bromyard's leisure centre has announced it will be closed on Tuesday due to flooding - just days after it reopened.

    The Bromyard Centre shut at the start of the pandemic in March last year and was unable to reopen at the same time as other Halo facilities in the county after the roof was vandalised last summer.

    It reopened on Friday, but heavy rain and thunderstorms in the town on Monday night has led to it closing its doors again.

    The centre is due to make an announcement later about whether it can reopen on Wednesday.

    The storms are set to become more widspread throughout Tuesday, although the warning will be in place through Wednesday too.

  13. Staffordshire sees first drop in Covid cases since Maypublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 26 July 2021

    Health chiefs in Staffordshire have urged people to continue their efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19 after seeing the first drop in cases for two months.

    The seven-day period to 22 July saw the number of cases in the county fall by more than 400 to 3,815, the first weekly drop in cases since the end of May.

    However, Staffordshire County Council said the number of people being tested also fell and could explain some of the reduction.

    A spokesperson said: “Cases appear to be falling, which suggests that things could be moving in the right direction.

    "However, it’s too early to be sure.

    "There are still a lot of people being infected and hospitalisations are rising, albeit slowly.

    "It remains as important as ever that everyone in Staffordshire continues taking sensible precautions to bring cases down.”

    Woodland near a major Solihull road has started to be cleared to make way for the HS2 high speed rail link.

    The company behind the rail project has confirmed that the next phase of construction will mean swathes of mature trees being removed from beside the A452.

    Pool Wood, which is opposite Birmingham Business Park, is located directly in the middle of the planned railway's route.

    “We will only be removing the minimum required for the construction of the railway,” the company said in a statement.

    A school's community cafe is staying open for a fortnight during the summer break to try to support families struggling to afford food.

    Organisers of the venue at Wrekin View Primary School, Telford, say breakfast and lunch are available on a "pay if you can" basis.

    Site manager Russell Garner says they know the holidays can be tough for families.

    "For some people, it might be a bit of a struggle so this is where the cafe comes in. The children can play while the parents have something to eat," he said.
