    A long-serving speedway promoter in Staffordshire has died.

    Tributes have been paid to Dave Tattum who was involved with the Stoke Potters at their Loomer Road stadium until it closed in 2019.

    He had been involved in setting up a new speedway team, Newcastle Diamonds, before his death at the weekend, British Speedway Promoters Ltd confirmed, external.

    Friend and former rider and promoter Graham Drury said the country's speedway sport had lost "an extremely passionate, hard-working man".

    Co-promoter at Newcastle, Rob Grant, said, external he was "beyond devastated" at the news, adding Mr Tattum had been "like another father figure to me".

  7. Man suffers facial injury in Shrewsbury attackpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 20 September 2021

    A man has suffered significant facial injuries after being hit by a pair of attackers, police say.

    The West Mercia force said the victim was approached by two men outside Lloyds Bank on Pride Hill, Shrewsbury, at about 23:30 BST on Saturday and struck with a long object.

    The pair, who left the scene in a car, are described as white, in their 20s or 30s, and between 5ft 6 and 5ft 11.

    Both were wearing a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms, police said.

  8. John Challis: 'A very humble man'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 20 September 2021

    The actor John Challis has been described as a great performer, actor and a "really, really nice person" by former Coronation Street actor Eric Potts.

    The pair performed together in 2014 in the Shakespeare play As You Like It when it was put on at the annual Stafford Castle festival.

    Mr Potts told BBC Radio Stoke that Challis, who died in his sleep after a battle with cancer, was always friendly and accessible to fans.

    "We would maybe go for late night whisky and just occasionally if something really tickled him, John would just become Boycie and the laugh would come out," he added.

    As well as his sitcom characters, Mr Potts said Challis also cared about the acting profession and others, and was "a very humble man".

    "He cared about his job, his industry and his role in it and I think if he could help anyone, guide anyone, he was more than happy to do so."

  9. Litter picker assaulted in Tamworthpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 20 September 2021

    A man who attacked a litter-picker is being sought by police who have today issued an appeal for information.

    The victim, 51, was assaulted from behind at about 14:15 BST on 8 September near the Dank Juice shop on Tamworth Road in Amington, Tamworth.

    He was taken to hospital for treatment.

    The attacker is described as a white man, in his mid-30s, approximately 5ft 10ins tall, and of a slim build. He was seen running off towards Amington Gardens.

    The Staffordshire force said a 37-year-old man was later arrested but had been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

    Officers appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

    New images show how plans could redevelop a Solihull shopping parade.

    The council has released artist’s concepts for the Kingshurst “village centre” and an updated masterplan for the scheme.

    The latest layout will form the basis of a full planning application, which is due to be submitted in late October.

    Proposals include a revamped road layout, 79 properties, a row of retail units and a community and health centre.

    An online consultation exercise is running until 10 October, with drop-in sessions on the Parade on Tuesday from 15:00 to 18:30, and on Thursday between 11:30 and 14:30.

    The total cost of the scheme has been estimated at about £34m, with the council looking to secure more than £6m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, to add to grants already secured.
