  16. Investigation into police force doctor closed due to lack of evidencepublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Dr Reg Bunting

An investigation into how allegations of sexual assault against a former police doctor were handled has closed due to a lack of evidence.

Dr Reginald Bunting worked for Avon and Somerset Police between 1972 and 2004. He died in 2013. It was alleged he committed sexual offences against staff members during his time with the force.

Police watchdog, the IPCC was looking into how those allegations were handled by Avon & Somerset Police in 1991, 1994 and 1998.

But most officers they spoke to couldn't recall investigations made or allegations against Dr. Bunting.

    IPCC Commissioner Cindy Butts said:

    Quote Message

It is clear that investigative work was carried out into the allegations on at least two occasions but unfortunately no records can be found which show the outcome of this work. The passage of time, the lack of paper records, which would have been disposed of, and the inability of witnesses to accurately recall events all amount to a lack of evidence on which to assess the conduct of relevant officers. I appreciate this will be frustrating for all those affected by Dr Bunting’s medical examinations particularly the officers who reported concerns.

    Cindy Butts, IPCC Commissioner
