    People living in two villages in Wiltshire have been protesting outside a meeting against plans for a huge chicken farm.

    Those living nearby claim the traffic, the smell and the noise would make their lives very difficult.

    But councillors approved the plans.

    Teenagers in Bristol have been working today to help rough sleepers.

    They were concerned about the rising numbers of homeless people in the city and decided to see how much they could do to help in just one week.

    Protest against factory plans

    Campaigners have lost their battle against plans for a huge poultry factory in Wiltshire after the proposal was approved by councillors.

    The farm between Sutton Veny and Longbridge Deverill, near Warminster, will house nearly 180,000 chickens.

    Villagers say the factory will cause unacceptable levels of noise, smell and traffic.

    The company behind the scheme insists it will improve the local environment.

    Two motorcycle enthusiasts from Gloucestershire are to get married on the eve of Europe's largest Harley Davidson bike rally.

    Shelley Denton and Paul Osborn are to tie the knot in Scotland tomorrow after travelling to the Cairngorms for Thunder in the Glens.

    A farmer from Wiltshire has defended her actions, after receiving a barrage of criticism online.

    Earlier this year, Rachel Rivers' piglets were rescued from a fire so she decided to reward the fire crews - by giving them sausages made from the animals they'd saved.

    It's fair to say it's got people worked up -so is it distasteful or the perfect way to say thank you?

    Midfielder Kevin Dawson could make his first Cheltenham start against West Ham in their EFL Cup second-round tie.

    Dawson joined the League Two side from Yeovil in the summer but his debut was delayed following a thigh injury.

    West Ham boss Slaven Bilic is unlikely to risk winger Michail Antonio after his recent return from a hamstring operation.

    Austria forward Marko Arnautovic is suspended for the game while defender Winston Reid (calf) is a doubt.

    Here's a warning for drivers.

    The M5 southbound will be closed overnight in Somerset for safety repair work.

    It'll be shut from 8pm between junction 23 for Bridgwater, Glastonbury and Wells and junction 24 for Minehead and Bridgwater.

    It won't open again until 6am tomorrow.

    Drivers have been advised by Highways England to allow extra time for their journeys.

    A rare red panda cub has been born at Longleat in Wiltshire.

    The baby male - named Turner - is the fourth successful birth in the past three years.

    Keeper Samantha Allworthy said Turner was "doing really well".

    She added his birth was "critical to the ongoing success of captive breeding programmes for red pandas worldwide".

    Red pandas were officially designated as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2008.

  16. Fire station apologises for sausage picturespublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

    Pigs

    Pewsey fire station has apologised for posting pictures of sausages made from pigs they'd rescued on social media.

    Six months ago fire crews extinguished a fire at a farm near Pewsey, saving 18 piglets and two sows.

    The farmer Rachel Rivers has since gifted sausages from the same pigs to the firefighters who rescued the animals. They posted pictures of them on Facebook.

    The story has prompted strong public reaction and divided opinion, and the pictures have now been taken down.

    A group of Bristol teenagers has run a special event today for homeless people.

    They've been handing out clothes, toiletries and other essentials, as well as hot soup and fresh bread.

    The team is taking part in the National Citizen Service summer challenge, and decided to help tackle Bristol's growing homelessness problem.

    Siobhan Dolan from vegan campaigning charity Viva said the animals should have been spared the abattoir once they had been saved from the blaze.

    A planning decision on a proposed chicken farm which could house nearly 200,000 is due to be made this afternoon.

    Wiltshire Council is considering the application for the site in Sutton Veny.

    More than 100 villagers are against the plans. Their concerns include congested roads, noisy ventilation fans and the smell.
