It has also distributed the invite via personalised billboards across the UK and adverts in national and international newspapers such as the Times, Telegraph, the Guardian, Italy’s La Repubblica and France’s Le Parisien.

No word yet from Banksy on whether he'll be taking up the gauntlet though.

  5. Rescued piglets served as sausages: PETA reactionpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

    SausagesImage source, Pewsey Fire Station

More reaction to our story about rescued piglets in Wiltshire being turned into sausages and given to the firemen who rescued them.

Mimi Bekhechi from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said: "These poor piglets were no better off for escaping the fire only to be put back into it six months later after being subjected to the horrifying experience of the abattoir.

"What if these firefighters had 'saved' a human child or a dog? Pigs feel fear and pain in just the same way as they do.

"When the emergency services rescue animals, PETA thanks them with vegan chocolates, not the animals' barbecued flesh."

    Quote Message

We'll be sending Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service packs of Linda McCartney vegan sausages so that they can see how easy it is to truly be heroes for pigs – by sparing them all suffering. Every day, more piglets are brought into the world to endure an agonising fate because of greed. We doubt the farmer can look beyond her own wallet.

    Media caption,

Watch: Sausages were gifted to the firefighters who rescued the pigs

More reaction from Facebook to the story about some rescued pigs in Wiltshire being turned into sausages and gifted to the fire service:

Michael Hudston: Lets not forget these piglets were being raised by a farm for the meat trade, not as pets! They were saved from a cruel horrible painful fiery death!

Charlotte Harker: Brilliant story! And a fitting way to say thank you I think. You complainers go eat a carrot! I'm gonna enjoy me some bacon! nom nom nom!

    Therese Lambert-Stiles: Insensitive and unprofessional

Hazel Nicholls: Oh for goodness sake, they were being bred for sausages, so why not let the firemen have some of them when the time came for them to be turned into food?!!

Jake Wilkinson: Good on the BBC for publishing this story. We all like to think the food on our plates magically appears without any cruelty along the way - but it doesn't. All meat was once a life.

Caroline Anne Baker: Bet the farmer gets a visit from animal rights!

  16. Reaction: Rescued pigs served up as sausagespublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

The piglets and sows at the farm in Milton Lilbourne

There has been plenty of reaction to the story about the piglets saved from a barn fire and later served up as dinner to the firefighters who rescued them.

Here's some of the comments on BBC Wiltshire's Facebook page, external:

    • Farrell Monaco: What a dreadful story. Why print it? Lovely that they saved the pigs but why publish their demise? Grim.
    • Lee Ray: What an awful story to run.
    • Kimberly Fanelli Spinelli: Horrible, just horrible...
    • Joshua Belt: Why is it a horrible story? They would have ended up on someone's plate either way. I think it's brilliant and a good way to say thanks.
    • Matthew Thomas Crisafi: Horrible. But normal. Pigs die everyday make bacon and sausages. The firefighters were only rescuing stock not lives. I wonder how many of y'all are vegetarian.
    • Why is an animal cute and cuddly until it's on your plate as mince?
    • Hannah Jones: LOL. they look lovely sausages. At least they died humanely and not burnt to death. I supose it is the way of the farming world.
    • Fiona Sadd: Disgusting story!!!!!
    • Dan Trudgian: Don't forget the brown sauce lads...
    • Ged Gibson: That's awful, she should have provided bacon as well.
    • Penny Bulpitt: What? That's far too much information!! .....not a very well thought through story .....

    Quote Message

I wanted to thank them. I promised them at the time when they actually go I'll bring down some sausages which they were all pleased about. We farm and that's what we do. We give them as best a life as they possibly can have. They have freedom and fields to run around in and you can't keep keep them as pets. I'm sure the vegetarians will hate it.
