Anti-racism charity Sari (Stand Against Racism and Inequality) has set up a "brand new" race equality commission, to begin in the New Year.

Sari director Alex Raikes said: "We've just appointed 12 amazing commissioners who will take forward that work."

She said they would be "volunteering" and all had the "expertise to fight and strive to get race equality for our city across all the different agencies."

Yesterday, a Safer Bristol report into how Bijan Ebrahimi's case was handled found that the police and council were "institutionally racist".

    Quote Message

Sari representatives did not pursue their escalation to a higher level and indeed there is no established escalation process that would have directed how such an escalation would proceed... had there been escalation from Sari to a senior level within both Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Bristol City Council, there would undoubtedly have been a renewed focus on Mr Ebrahimi’s situation in response."

Train travel is expected to be disrupted over the Christmas period. Great Western Railway said it's due to engineering work on the new Crossrail project in London.

Dan Panes, from GWR, said: "Network Rail has got a significant amount of work to do to get the track ready for our brand new trains.

"There's always a balance to be struck here - do we say 'yes' to Network Rail taking up a piece of engineering work when it's going to disrupt customers?

"Or do we say 'no' and risk causing even more disruption in the long run? I think most customers realise it's worth the short term pain."

Paddington station will be closed for four days from Christmas Eve. Passengers should check services before they travel.

The cost of train fares will rise in the new year, a transport watchdog has warned.

Linda McCord from Transport Focus said: "The disruption over the Christmas period will be followed very quickly by passengers having to pay more for their fares.

"We know that passengers want value for money. So having been disrupted, to then find themselves going into work paying more - I'm sure passengers will find that very hard to swallow."

  8. Spiky residents' war on wingspublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2017

Residents in Bristol who've added spikes to trees to deter pigeons have been criticised on social media.

People living in flats opposite the trees in Clifton said it was to prevent bird poo covering their cars.

Estate management company - Hillcrest - said they'd had a lot of complaints from flat owners at Bartlett Court about the mess roosting pigeons.

They said they'd looked at lots of options, including chopping down or netting trees, before deciding upon the spikes, due to a tree protection orders.

And had also previously tried decoy birds, hanging CDs and noise deterrents.

    Quote Message

There are a couple of trees where a number of the branches overhang the private car park. These trees attract roosting pigeons which in turn create a lot of detritus on the cars parked below. Bartlett Court is a very prestigious development and as such there are some very expensive cars parked here. Bird detritus can cause permanent damage to the paint work on cars if not removed promptly and the worst affected leaseholders wanted action taken to try and improve the situation."

There's been criticism on social media after photos emerged of trees in Bristol with anti-pigeon spikes installed along the branches.
