The Stoke Gifford Transport Link has now opened to traffic.

The new road was built as part of the MetroBus project and forms part of a route between Cribbs Causeway and Hengrove.

Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said the new road will "take traffic away from unsuitable residential areas and provide local businesses with a long awaited direct route from Aztec West to the M32 and the city centre".

Most of the 50 km MetroBus public transport system, funded by Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire councils, is expected to open in Spring 2018 after delays with the ticketing system.

The cost of building the network has gone up by almost 5% in a year to £230m.

  3. Rare bird sighting brings in the twitcherspublished at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

A penduline tit has been sighted in Gloucester.

The bird, which has only been recorded once before in Gloucestershire since records began, was spotted at Plock Court wetland area over the weekend.

Tits tend to live throughout mainland Europe, Asia, Africa and North America but several species of the bird are migratory, which could explain how it has ended up visiting the city.

The last time the bird winged its way to Gloucester was back in January 2016 when it was seen at the Horsbere Reserve.

  4. Bath Abbey's pews to be replaced with chairspublished at 20:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

    Bath Abbey

Bath Abbey is to have its pews removed and replaced with stackable chairs in a move that the World Heritage Site says could "provoke strong reactions".

The historical abbey had to apply for permission from the Church of England to remove the pews and, along with other improvements, the total cost will be £19.3m.

Removing the pews will allow the nave to be opened up, a new heating system to be installed and improve access for disabled people.

Revd Edward Mason of Bath Abbey said he understood that "change to a historic and much-loved building like the Abbey can be difficult to understand".

But he said there had been considerable support from the local community and said the change will greatly benefit visitors to the abbey.

Removing the pews will also allow historic ledger stones to be exposed for the first time in over 150 years.

"Finishing my career in Wales is important to me," said Hibbard, who has won 38 Wales and three Lions caps.

The future of how we use buses is being trialled in an experiment in Avonmouth.

Instead of catching the bus you could catch the Buzz - a service which responds to the demands of passengers, who can even control the route.

Several companies have signed up to it and organisers said it had the potential to expand to the whole country's bus network.

  9. Three 'unusually tall' protected milestonespublished at 18:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

    A milestoneImage source, Historic England

Three milestones in Gloucestershire have been highlighted among the 20 most intriguing places or items given protection by Historic England this year.

The "handsome" stones sit along the B4073, which the public body describes as a "twisting, up-and-down route running for six miles between Painswick and Gloucester".

Milestones, though a familiar part of the street scene, are inherently fragile and subject to loss, theft and damage, particularly from traffic and ever-larger vehicles, which now use these pre-motorisation routes. The milestones are unusually tall, and stand proudly with white-painted cast-iron plates whose inscriptions, in a fine font using the characteristic long ‘s’ of the 18th century, are picked out in black paint.
