  2. Water parasite boil notice in place over weekendpublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    A notice telling residents in Clevedon to boil water after the discovery of a parasite at a treatment works looks likely to remain in place until Monday.

    Bristol Water said Clevedon works was immediately taken out of operation on Wednesday following the discovery of the Cryptosporidium bug.

    A "boil notice" was issued to 7,000 homes in BS21 and BS49 on Thursday.

    The company said it waited 24 hours for test results to be confirmed before informing residents.

    A spokesman said it was "aiming to be in a position to confirm the boil notice removal on Monday morning".

    The Consumer Council for Water has responded to Bristol Water's decision to introduce a boil water notice in parts of North Somerset, after traces of the parasite cryptosporidium were discovered at a treatment works in Clevedon.

    A housekeeper at a Bristol hospital has been cheering up patients by sneaking into their rooms and drawing their caricatures on a whiteboard.

    Edwin Andaya has been handing out tea, biscuits and chat at Southmead Hospital for more than a decade.

    He has also been brightening up the hospital's notice boards and surprising patients with his calligraphy and portraits.

    An increase in the number of mental health beds for young people in Bristol will prevent them having to be treated further away from home, it's claimed.

    The BBC has learnt that the number of mental health beds in the city for young people is to be triple from nine to 32 by March this year.

    A play inspired by the floods in Somerset four years ago will be shown for the first time in the county tonight.

    The show - which is called Reclaimed has been made by the Wassail Theatre Company and highlights the pressures that come with evacuating village communities.

    The first performance will be in the village of Moorland this evening.

  13. Contaminated water supply expected to be unusable this weekendpublished at 11:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    Bristol Water is warning that a contaminated water supply in North Somerset could remain unusable until Sunday.

    The water supply has been infected with Cryptosporidium a parasite which can cause diarrhoea and vomiting.

    More than 7,000 homes are at risk in Cleveland and the surrounding areas and have been warned to boil all water for eating and drinking.

    Staff at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery say they've been caught by surprise by a huge spike in demand for a Bansky print.

    Zac Mensah said normally it would expect to sell half a dozen Paint Pot Angel prints per week.

    "One morning we came in and we had 500 orders, then by the end of the day we had over 1,000," he said.

    Mr Mensah added he thought the extra interest had come as a result of postings in internet forums following a number of sales to specialist dealers in Japan and the US.

    Some schools in North Somerset have been closed because of the contaminated water supply in the area.

    Cryptosporidium, which can cause diarrhoea and vomiting, has been found.

    Thousands of people in the Clevedon area are being advised to boil their water.

    Clevedon School, St John the Evangelist School and Mary Elton Primary School are closed today as a precaution.
