While some people rate restaurant food or holidays a Bristol man has built up a following rating park benches.

Samuel Wilmot, 23, started sharing pictures of benches on his Instagram account "as a joke" while getting his master's degree at Swansea University.

They are given marks for for comfort, view and style, and the account - which has gathered 9,000 followers - also boasts benches from India and Australia.

"It's about getting out there any enjoying the time in nature and the chance to breathe," said Mr Wilmot.

Benches with history are given a good rating

"I started it as just a bit of fun for friends and over the last 18 months it's just become more and more popular," he said.

Each post on @ratethisbench has comments from Mr Wilmot on the bench's surroundings and the view.

"All the benches are marked out of 10 - up to three for the location - there's one mark for arm-rests, one for curvature of the seat and one for decent back support and then there are marks for the wow," he said.

Mr Wilmot said when he asked a man to take his photo on a bench at Newport railway station he laughed but said his friend reviewed hand-dryers so "it's not the weirdest request he'd had".

Although so far none of the benches have been given top marks, Mr Wilmot said his favourite is a bench near his home town of Yate. "It's really big and bulky and really well treated - a really lovely bench."

A team from the Ministry of Defence in Bristol have won an international award recognising their efforts in supplying the NHS with vital equipment at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), at Abbey Wood, in Filton, helped to supply the NHS with more than 10 billion items of PPE and medical equipment including ventilators.

The technical assurance team of 24 people worked with NHS staff to ensure the equipment met strict regulations and standards.

They have won the 2020 International Quality Award for team of the year from the Chartered Quality Institute of auditors.

The judges said: “The MOD team created a management system in a matter of weeks and through their rigour, skill and determination saved the UK over £2 billion by reducing the rejection rate of PPE to less than 0.13%."

The team was established in early April and evaluated more than 7,000 supplier submissions to ensure technical standards and EU Regulations were being met for a range of PPE and medical devices for front line healthcare professionals.
