West of England Mayor Dan Norris said he would approach the government with “a steel fist in a velvet glove” following his election.

He said: “If [the government] doesn't deliver for us, we will have topoint that out.

"I think over recent years things haven't come our way and there hasn't been a fuss made about it and that's not good for our region.

"Our region needs some very important things, we deserve it and we've got to deliver on it," he said.

He said some of his priorities would include launching a new public transport system for the region, housing and the environment.

  3. Bristol Mayor promises 'good relationships'published at 11:24 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

    Marvin Rees

Marvin Rees, who will be Bristol’s Mayor for another three years following his re-election, said its city council will work well with other authorities regardless of their political affiliation.

Mr Rees told BBC Politics West: "When we get to the local level, politics is about delivery.

"We will work well with Toby [Savage], the Conservative [leader] in South Gloucestershire, we'll work well with Don [Davies] (North Somerset Council’s independent leader), and we'll work well with Bath and North East Somerset.

"Our interests in Bristol are interdependent with our neighbours. This is about building really good relationships."

He also praised former West of England Mayor Tim Bowles, who new Mayor Dan Norris accused of being “invisible”.

Mr Rees said: "We had our frustrations with the combined authority but Tim's a very honourable person and I would say he's a person who you can shake hands with and you don't have to count your fingers. I really respected that with Tim."

  4. West of England must 'catch up', new Mayor sayspublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

Labour’s Dan Norris, elected as Mayor of the West of England, said the region must “catch up” and accused his predecessor, Conservative Tim Bowles, of being “invisible”.

Mr Norris polled 125,482 votes, beating Conservative businessman Samuel Williams by 40,093 votes.

"I think the really important thing for us to do is to catch up because we all know that we had an invisible Tory metro mayor before,” Mr Norris said.

"That's bad news for our region because our region was invisible too.

"When I look at the work that's happening in other parts of the country, we really need to do something about that."

  15. Creeping closer to a resultpublished at 00:00 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

    Bristol count

As the clock strikes midnight, the number of wards where the count has been completed is creeping up and up.

Will we see Bristol's first Green Party mayor in Sandy Hore-Ruthven or will Labour's Marvin Rees secure enough votes to stay on in the role?

Mr Hore-Ruthven trailed by a little over 14,000 votes after the first stage so now the second preferences of voters are being counted - it's tense!

We *think* the result may be announced in around half an hour or so.

  16. Turnout confirmed as over 41%published at 23:10 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

    Bristol mayoral election count

Turnout has been confirmed as 41.15% by returning officer Tim O'Gara.

Of the 140,599 ballot papers verified, 1,639 were rejected - 711 of them for people voting for more candidates than they were entitled to!

  17. First round results in fullpublished at 22:45 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

We know they can no longer win, but let's take a look at the performances of the other candidates.

It was the Conservatives' Alistair Watson in third place with 25,816 votes, followed by the Liberal Democrats Caroline Gooch with 15,517.

The rest came in as follows - Sean Donnelly (IND) - 4,956; Tom Baldwin (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) - 3,194; John Langley (IND) - 1,528; Robert Clarke (Reform UK) - 806; Oska Shaw 389.

  18. Rees v Hore-Ruthvenpublished at 22:32 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

The predictions were correct and we know now it is indeed down to two.

In the first round of voting, incumbent Marvin Rees took 50,510 votes and his nearest challenger Sandy Hore-Ruthven gained 36,331.

A little over 14,000 votes the difference as we approach stage two of the count.

  19. Two horse race?published at 22:21 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

BBC Radio Bristol's Pete Simson is at the count for us and he says it's looking likely that the two going forward to the next stage will be Marvin Rees (Labour) and Sandy Hore-Ruthven (Green).

But, we await the official announcement...
