  6. 'A moment of release after months of hard work'published at 07:55 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

    Robin Markwell
    Political reporter, BBC Points West

Tears or cheers, hugs or shrugs - election counts conjure up crowds of campaigners noisily celebrating or glumly commiserating together.

It’s a moment of release after weeks of hard work.

Polling stations looked and felt different this year as measures were brought in to keep us safe.

Voters were asked to wear a face covering, keep socially distanced in the queue and the number of people allowed inside was restricted

This time it will feel much more muted as a pandemic count comes with new rules.

For one - there will be fewer people there. Numbers inside venues will be tightly controlled.

If you are allowed in - many counts will insist on seeing a negative lateral flow test first.

Counting staff will sit in socially distanced bubbles, political observers will be told where to stand.

With fewer people present at the declarations - more councils will be live streaming their results to keep people up to date.

But be prepared to wait – the extra measures may mean results take a little longer too.
